1.	 When we defecate in the
open, flies get attracted to the excreta and
in turn carry it into our food. When it rains, the
excreta will be carried to our water sources and
our fields. Not washing hands after defecating is
equally a problem. Our hands will contaminate the
food we eat which makes us sick.

Sanitation refers to the safe disposal of human excreta and
refuse. Sanitation promotes healthy living conditions. It
includes managing waste water, storm water, solid waste, and
household refuse and it also includes ensuring that people
have safe drinking water and enough water for washing. Here
we focus on the safe management of human excreta
6.	If you have the HIV virus, poor
hygiene places extra stress on your weakened
immune system which can accelerate the shift to
full-blown AIDS.
7.	Poorly disposed off faeces
contaminate the environment and bring a cycle
of problems. For example, even the grass that
our cows will be grazing on will be contaminated
and can pass on worms to our animals. When this
happens, the cows fall sick and you will spend a
lot of money to treat them. In the worst cases
they may die. Eating meat from such animals is
dangerous to us as well. Besides, these faeces
can be washed into the water sources in our
community, which in turn causes disease to the
members of the community.
8.	Privacy, dignity, conve-
0nience and safety for us
and our families: Having a pit latrine
helps us and our families relieve ourselves in
privacy. By having a pit latrine in our homes, we
shall earn respect from the community. When we
have pit latrines, our families will avoid accidents
such as snake bites while relieving ourselves in
the bushes. Pit latrines will save us from the
embarrassment of other people seeing us relieve
ourselves.
9.	Many children die every
year from diseases that could
have been prevented if our families had access
to a proper latrine and soap to wash hands. And
it’s not only children getting sick; adults get sick
too. When you fall sick, you stay away from work,
which means there’s no income for the family.This
makes life even harder.
2.	Good hygiene at school
promotes effective learning: Children perform
better when they are in a hygienic and clean
environment. Children have a right to basic
facilities such as school latrines, safe drinking
water, clean surroundings and information on
hygiene. If these conditions are created, children
come to school, enjoy learning, learn better and
bring back to our families good practices on
sanitation and hygiene.
3.	When we dispose human
excreta well, it shows that we have a
responsible attitude towards the hygiene of our
families, community, and the environment. It
means that we are interested in making sure that
diseases are not spread.
4.	Good sanitation prevents diseases
spread by human excreta. If our hygiene is poor we
shall have many health problems such as chronic
diarrhea, intestinal worms, bilharzia and hepatitis.
These diseases can lead to malnutrition and
stunting, especially in small children and in adults,
which makes it difficult for people to stay healthy
and be productive.
5.	Poor sanitation discourages people
from doing business with us. For example we may
have a lot of milk but if buyers are not confident of
the hygiene of where it is being produced, they will
not want to buy our milk.
10.	 Increases enrolment of
girls: The lack of private sanitary facilities
for girls can discourage parents from sending
girls to school and contributes to the drop out of
girls, particularly at puberty. Girls need latrines
with privacy and where they can hang their bags
during the times they are in menstruation and
need to change.
11. 	 Environmental cleanliness:
Having latrines and using them properly prevents
pollution of the environment and limits health
hazards for the community at large.
12. 	Implementing children’s
rights: Children have the right to be as
healthy and happy as possible. Being clean,
healthy and having clean water and proper
sanitation facilities contribute to a happy
childhood. It is everyone’s’ responsibility to see
this happen
13. 	 Washing hands properly
after using the toilet, handling
animals and before and after handling food
helps prevent the spread of various germs, some
of which can cause diseases. It is important to
wash hands before preparing food, before eating,
after going to the toilet, after handling rubbish
or working in the garden.
14. If we do not dispose off
excreta well, it is possible that we
will always remain poor.This is because all our
hard earned money will always go into treating
illnesses that we can prevent. When we choose
to dispose off excreta well, our families will
fall sick less often, which will help us save our
income for other important things such as paying
our children’s fees.

It includes managing waste water, storm water, solid waste, and household refuse and it also includes ensuring that people have safe drinking water and enough water for washing. Here we focus on the safe management of human excreta 6. If you have the HIV virus, poor hygiene places extra stress on your weakened immune system which can accelerate the shift to full-blown AIDS. 7. Poorly disposed off faeces contaminate the environment and bring a cycle of problems. For example, even the grass that our cows will be grazing on will be contaminated and can pass on worms to our animals. When this happens, the cows fall sick and you will spend a lot of money to treat them. In the worst cases they may die. Eating meat from such animals is dangerous to us as well. Besides, these faeces can be washed into the water sources in our community, which in turn causes disease to the members of the community. 8. Privacy, dignity, conve- 0nience and safety for us and our families: Having a pit latrine helps us and our families relieve ourselves in privacy. By having a pit latrine in our homes, we shall earn respect from the community. When we have pit latrines, our families will avoid accidents such as snake bites while relieving ourselves in the bushes. Pit latrines will save us from the embarrassment of other people seeing us relieve ourselves. 9. Many children die every year from diseases that could have been prevented if our families had access to a proper latrine and soap to wash hands. And it’s not only children getting sick; adults get sick too. When you fall sick, you stay away from work, which means there’s no income for the family.This makes life even harder. 2. Good hygiene at school promotes effective learning: Children perform better when they are in a hygienic and clean environment. Children have a right to basic facilities such as school latrines, safe drinking water, clean surroundings and information on hygiene. If these conditions are created, children come to school, enjoy learning, learn better and bring back to our families good practices on sanitation and hygiene. 3. When we dispose human excreta well, it shows that we have a responsible attitude towards the hygiene of our families, community, and the environment. It means that we are interested in making sure that diseases are not spread. 4. Good sanitation prevents diseases spread by human excreta. If our hygiene is poor we shall have many health problems such as chronic diarrhea, intestinal worms, bilharzia and hepatitis. These diseases can lead to malnutrition and stunting, especially in small children and in adults, which makes it difficult for people to stay healthy and be productive. 5. Poor sanitation discourages people from doing business with us. For example we may have a lot of milk but if buyers are not confident of the hygiene of where it is being produced, they will not want to buy our milk. 10. Increases enrolment of girls: The lack of private sanitary facilities for girls can discourage parents from sending girls to school and contributes to the drop out of girls, particularly at puberty. Girls need latrines with privacy and where they can hang their bags during the times they are in menstruation and need to change. 11. Environmental cleanliness: Having latrines and using them properly prevents pollution of the environment and limits health hazards for the community at large. 12. Implementing children’s rights: Children have the right to be as healthy and happy as possible. Being clean, healthy and having clean water and proper sanitation facilities contribute to a happy childhood. It is everyone’s’ responsibility to see this happen 13. Washing hands properly after using the toilet, handling animals and before and after handling food helps prevent the spread of various germs, some of which can cause diseases. It is important to wash hands before preparing food, before eating, after going to the toilet, after handling rubbish or working in the garden. 14. If we do not dispose off excreta well, it is possible that we will always remain poor.This is because all our hard earned money will always go into treating illnesses that we can prevent. When we choose to dispose off excreta well, our families will fall sick less often, which will help us save our income for other important things such as paying our children’s fees.
