The Lord of the Rings is a novel written by J.R.R. Tolkien about hobbits and humans who form a fellowship to destroy a ring and defeat the dark lord Sauron. The Fellowship of the Ring, the first volume of the trilogy, was published in 1954 and tells of the hobbit Frodo Baggins and the fellowship who set out from the Shire to destroy the One Ring.
