Volunteers cleaned over 72 areas in Johannesburg in preparation for the 2010 FIFA World Cup. The Gautrain transportation system began operations, with ministers and ambassadors among the first passengers. Houses were also completed in Ivory Park for elderly residents by young builders and volunteers helping the community. The Africa Village festival during the World Cup featured business, fashion, food, culture and art from across Africa. Johannesburg decorated the city with images of Nelson Mandela to welcome international guests for the tournament. The Australian national team praised South Africa's organization of the World Cup while training in the northern part of Johannesburg. Fan Fests and public viewing areas around the city allowed fans to watch matches on giant screens.
