Farm Tour
The farm locatedinNewDeal containedsheep,swine,andcattle. We firststartedthe tour by
viewingthe sheepbarnandthe pasture containedaroundthirtysheeprunningaround.Itwasvaried
withdifferentbreeds of sheep;some blackfacedandblackleggedsheepandsome withwhite facesand
legs. We learnedabouthowTexasTechdiscoveredthe gene forsheepthatissimilartodouble
muscling.We drove bythe swine barnbut didnotgo in due to the fact that we wouldhave all hadto
showerafterviewingthe swine whichwouldhave wastedtoomuchtime. We thenproceedingintoan
eerie buildingcoveredincobwebs;straycats ran aroundthe buildingbeggingforusto pettheir
ringworminfestedbodies. The building the three storieshighandcontainedahuge mixerformixingthe
feed.The mixerwasabig hole inthe floorthathad a compartmentabove itwhere the substancesthat
are droppedintothe mixerare held. Whengoingthroughthe buildingwe hadtobe cautiousof the
pipesdue tothat fact that theywere veryhot. The hot pipescontainedmolassesforthe feedwhichisa
mainingredientinsweetfeedsforanimalsandisgoodforputtingweightonanimalsandissometimes
usedto keepweightonolderanimals. Onthe secondstorythere isa catwalkwe walkedoutonto see
the feedyard.We hadto watch our stepto make certainwe didnot missourstepeventhoughwe were
informedwe couldnotfall all the waythrough.Inthe firstset of pensthere were notany cattle because
theyhad justfinishedresearchwiththe cowsthathad formerlyoccupiedthe pens. The restof the pens
on the leftside were full of cattle of all differentbreeds,researchwasbeingconductedonthematthat
time.Howeveronthe rightside of the catwalkthere wasnot any cattle butthere wasslantedpensor
doorsthat were there tohelpmove cattle aroundeither. We alsolearnedaboutTemple Grandinand
howshe made the reformedthe cattle industry.She didthisbymakingaworkingalleythatmovedthe
cattle ina lessstressful mannerbymovingthemincirclesandslowlythe openingforthe cattle would

accidentsfromthe cattle beingstressedout. The farmtour was informativeof three differenttypesof
animalsandalsoof howfeedismixed.
