In 2015, the author went to Portugal for a semester abroad program in Lisbon. They initially struggled with homesickness and the cold weather. However, over time the author adjusted to life in Lisbon, making friends and exploring places like Praia de Mira. The author fell in love with Lisbon and decided to stay for an additional semester, getting jobs and a boyfriend. However, they eventually ran out of money and had to return home, having gained greater self-knowledge from their travels within Portugal and abroad.

2015

2. In 2015, I went to Portugal to an exchangeat
Escola SuperiordeComunicação Social of
Instituto Politécnico de Lisboa.
The first days were hard – I had a fever, I missed home,
I had just two portuguese friends that were traveling
when I arrived.
The only thing that made me think about giving up
was the coldest wind in this whole world, like a
punch, everytime I turned the corner of my building.
But, never mind, I’m known as the drama queen.

3. Little by little, me and the weather
were getting better.

I used to sit everyday at the same cafe in the
“windy corner” to have a cup of coffee and a
Pastel de Nata.
Actually, I like Lisbon more than any other city
in the world. It makes me feel comfortable.
I also made a safe spot at my rooms’ balcony.
Finally, I got used to my surrounding.

6. I just applied for one semester. But, by the middle of the
year, I met my boyfriend, João, and I decided to stay in
Lisbon for one more semester.
I got a job at 360imprimir as a content “translator” from
PT-PT to PT-BR and a freelancer job at AdClick, writing
4 articles/day.
But that was just two tiny issues:
time and money.
At this point, I had no more money, no more visa
and nowhere to stay. Also, I didn’t have enough time
to apply to the exchange again, so I decided to be
there by my own.
