Evaluation Question 4: How did
you use media technologies in
the construction and research,
planning and evaluation stages?
Kris Leonard
Throughout the whole process I used a number of different media technologies such as:
Blogger-
YouTube-
Slideshare-
Microsoft Word-
Adobe Photoshop-
Adobe Premiere-
Microsoft Excel-
Research & Planning
For the initial research for my documentary I watched 6 documentaries most of which I
watched on YouTube. I also watched 2 of the documentaries on DVD.
Google was also a useful tool because it allowed me to search for things such as
‘conventions of a documentary’ or ‘rule of thirds shot example’.
Another useful tool for research was Microsoft Word as it enabled us to create a
questionnaire in order to do some research in to the preferences of our target audience.
We then took the results from the questionnaire and put them in to graphs by using
Microsoft Excel which allowed us to keep the results well organised and easy to read.
Research & Planning
Blogger was very useful in the planning stages as it allowed us to organise our plans
efficiently so that they were all in the same place and easy to access. It is easy to use
and allowed us to embed videos and pictures.
All of the research and planning was done on the dell computers in college as these
had all of the required software that we needed to carry out our research and planning.
Construction
For the construction of the documentary we used a Sony HXR MC 2000E and a Canon
XA10 to film the whole documentary. These were very useful. The Canon XA10 was
used for handheld shots such as the tracking shot around the BBC building as it allowed
more movement because it’s smaller and lighter. The Sony HXR was used for any shots
that didn’t require movement such as the establishing shot or the interviews.
For the construction of the poster we used Adobe Photoshop which was quite easy to use
and allowed us to put things such as box texts in with ease.
For the construction of the Radio Ad we used the a clip microphone that was connected
to a (camera name). This was a very simple process and the clip microphone allowed us
to get the best result.
Construction
After we had filmed we used Adobe Premiere to do all the editing. This was a really
useful, easy to use piece of software that allowed us to get the best result when editing.
We also used premiere to edit the radio advert and it was again easy to use.
Some of the features we used were-
Cross Dissolve- This is a video transition that makes transitioning smooth
The Cut Tool- This allowed me to cut up bits of video or audio
Audio EQ- This allowed me to adjust levels of audio
