This document discusses the role of competition policy in promoting economic growth in the European Union. It argues that competition policy can contribute substantially to the EU's growth and jobs strategy by removing market restrictions and excessive market power. An active competition policy should not only enforce antitrust laws through ex post interventions, but also promote competition through advocacy of market-based solutions earlier in the process. Globalization enhances competition and competition in turn lowers prices and increases demand, benefiting workers through higher incomes and investment. An effective competition policy harnesses the benefits of both competition and globalization for growth and employment in the EU.
