Environmentally friendly sculptures ARTEFACT
SARAH “The Cheese Lady” KAUFMANN ARTIST
We could not find much information about her but here are some basic facts about her Born and grew up in Wisconsin Has been cheese sculpting for 16 years She is one of the main managers of a dairy farm in Wisconsin BIOGRAPHY
Sarah creates environmentally friendly sculptures by using cheese as her main component The reason why she is interested in this because cheese sculptures do not go to waste, rot, does not cause pollution and does not use electricity to make them Main inspiration – she grew up in Wisconsin where she was surrounded by cows, milk and cheese INSPIRATION
Sarah quoted “ If you were born and raised in Wisconsin, surrounded by dairy cows, cheese factories and people who wear orange triangle hats as high fashion, you might think it would just seem…natural!”
The main purpose of her sculpting cheese is that she wants to educate people about the varieties of cheese She wants them to feel the warm flavour in the audience's taste buds because cheese is used as a minority ingredient in most dishes, so we tend to miss out the flavour
The main ingredient of making the cheese sculpture is “CHEESE” Other than that, the artist uses environmentally materials like knifes, spoons, spatulas, toothpick, knife, graters etc
As cheese sculpting only requires skill and basic carving equipment, the process is very easy you get a block of cheese, and let your imagination go wild! THAT’S NO IT!
The block of cheese is kept and designed in a temperature controlled room The artist creates the basic overall shape and then removes any excess cheese Then the basic features start to take place Once the shape and the basic features are ready, then comes the details ( the longest and the hardest part of the creation of cheese sculpture) when the sculpture is ready, it is left in a lower temperature room for the cheese to harden
EXAMPLE OF SCULPTURES

ANALYSING SCULPTURES This sculpture does not have an particular title but it is a sculpture of a sheep bearing the words “merry dairy Christmas” This particular cheese sculpture is trying to promote dairy products in the Christmas season The possible messages that this sculpture is trying to convey are: `the animal can denote the fact that killing animals/hunting too much can cause an alteration in the food web (natural cycle of animal life) – peace in their faces The animal can denote, do not kill sheep to use for clothing, accessories/product The process of making these accessories can contribute to global warming due to the amount of electricity used to make them We should use these animals for natural causes (eg: making milk/cheese) – “Merry Dairy Christmas” ( try and do a good cause during Christmas)
