This document summarizes a student's lab experiment investigating how different cup materials (paper, metal, glass, plastic, Styrofoam) affect the rate of heat loss over time. The student hypothesized that the Styrofoam cup would lose heat the fastest, but found that the paper cup actually lost heat the most rapidly, losing 34.55% of its heat after 5 minutes. In contrast, the Styrofoam cup lost only 10.91% of its heat over the same period. The student attributes the paper cup's faster heat loss to paper being a soft material that allows warm water to lose heat quickly, while the Styrofoam cup retains heat better.
