Customised and Scalable
E-Houses can be adapted to local and industrial conditions.
Flexible in design, E-Houses can be upgraded with rear access
doors, expandable walls, space saving design and be stackable
(when required), with a robust construction.
Save Time
As all E-House construction is conducted prior to arrival at
the project site, major disruptions to construction and staff on
site is avoided.
Better Use of Space
Our E-House Solutions aim to optimise layout and design,
consuming less area than a traditional block building. Efficiencies
gained by positioning and access considerations for electrical
equipment, allows for easy access to the equipment without the
need for additional building space.
Safety and Quality
Every E-House is pre-assembled in a
controlled environment. Our compliance
to local codes and standards ensures
maximum safety with a quality outcome.
During the design phase, we consider
a projects environmental aspects,
and provide reliable solutions through
compliance to local Australian Standards.

Boddington Gold Mine (BGM) located 130km south east of Perth,
is the largest gold and copper mine in Australia. Built on the
footprint of the original Boddington Gold Mine, the expansion
mines the hard gold/copper ore that lies beneath depleted oxide
pits. The project value exceeded $2.4 billion and involved open
cut mining from two large pits and is expected to produce an
average 850,000 ounces of gold and 30,000 tonnes of copper a
year for more than 20 years. Requiring a key provider to supply
power distribution and motor control for the site, Boddington
Gold awarded Schneider Electric three contracts worth over $60
million. Schneider Electric supplied three transportable 33kV
sub stations, twelve transportable 1/3.3/.443kV substations,
equipment for existing traditional substations and 36 distribution
transformers from 1.5MVA to 25MVA. The
project included design and manufacture
of portable switch rooms, all cabling within

Providing electricity, water supply and
sewerage services to almost 80,000
customers across the Northern Territory,
Power and Water Corporation has a
commitment to its customers to provide
reliable, uninterrupted power. Looking
for a contingency plan to aid them in the
event of substation equipment downtime,
Power and Water Corporation contacted
Schneider Electric to discuss their needs
for a mobile substation. The brief was
simple: supply a product which was ready-
to-go, easy-to-use, safe and could be used
in a variety of situations.
Solution
Schneider Electric’s NOMAD mobile substation is a solution
that provides electrical distributors with a means to carry out
maintenance and emergency work on substations within an
existing network, while continuing to distribute power.
Designed to be deployed quickly, NOMAD mobile units come
prefabricated from Schneider Electric and are mounted on a
quad axle trailer with multiple transformer combinations. To allow
customers to easily move the units between sites, NOMAD is
designed to enable trucking on main roads without an escort and
the weight of the product has been carefully calculated to comply
with Traffic Authorities’ requirements.

Supply of NOMAD Mobile Substation for Power
and Water Corporation
Schneider Electric proves to be ‘upwardly mobile’
with supply of Nomad Mobile Substation.
19Customer Service 1300 369 233
Once on site, a quick substation testing procedure can be
implemented to ensure the integrity of the substation before
connectivity. Connection is made easy using the on-board cable
reel with appropriate terminations.
The mobile substations for Power and Water Corporation have
been fitted out with 22kV, 630A, 31.5kA/3s WSA switchgear as
well as MiCOM 120, 121 protection relays and miniature circuit
breakers. A MiCOM C434 modular bay control unit has also been
installed in the substations. The C434 is designed for the control
and monitoring of up to 24 electrically operated switchgear units
equipped with electrical checkback signalling. During operation,
the user-friendly interface promotes safe operation of the
substation by preventing non-permissible switching operations.
Power and Water Corporation is using one of the mobile
substations, which they have called ‘Nomad B’, to support existing
substations in the Darwin and rural areas to Pine Creek. Equipped
with integrated onboard communication technology, this substation
can be controlled and monitored by a remote operator. The first
assignment of Nomad B was at Humpty
Doo Zone Substation while maintenance
was carried out. Operating as desired,
the use of the mobile substation allowed
maintenance work to be completed without
causing power disruption to customers in
the area.
The mobile substations were joined by a
mobile switch room from Schneider Electric
late in 2012. This further improved Power
and Water Corporation’s contingency ability
and network resilience.
Conclusion
Schneider Electric’s NOMAD mobile
substations are a solution that has allowed
Power and Water Corporation to reduce
costs and improve electricity supply to
their customers. The solution mitigates the
risk in both maintenance and emergency
situations.
“The Schneider Electric NOMAD mobile
substations have provided us greater
capability and flexibility to carry out
essential maintenance on our existing
substations,” Bertram Birk, Power and
Water’s General Manager Power
Networks said.
“These units allow us to completely bypass
affected areas, meaning our customers can
continue to receive an uninterrupted supply
of electricity while works are being
carried out.”
Wendy Minne, Vice President Schneider
Electric Energy Business Unit is pleased
the products are performing well.
“Our NOMAD mobile substations highlight
Schneider Electric’s ability to provide
complete integrated solutions for our
customers,” Wendy said.
“With our extensive product range,
engineering base, project management
experience and synergistic capabilities,
we can provide our clients with a solution
to their business problems. The mobile
substation solution, which has come out
of our Rocklea factory, is a solution we are
particularly proud of.”
20 Energy Projects and Services Capability Statement
In line with this, the company is
undertaking a number of major upgrades
to improve the capacity and reliability of
the Warriewood Sewage Treatment Plant.
Through Transfield Services, Sydney Water
has chosen Schneider Electric to design,
manufacture, supply and install new
switchgear for the project.
A number of requirements were specified
for the project, including the use of
environmentally safe products, connectivity
to the existing SCADA system and safety
features for those using the system.
Schneider Electric was able to fulfill all
of these aspects and come up with a
complete integrated solution.
Switchgear Upgrade for Better
Monitoring and Measurement
While Transfield Services, leading
providers of asset services, was upgrading
other areas of the Warriewood Sewage
Treatment Plant, it was noted that the
11kV high voltage switchboard was in
need of replacement. Transfield Services
contacted Schneider Electric to supply
new product, which would increase the
safety and reliability of the switchgear. With
their extensive product range, engineering
base, project management experience and
synergistic capabilities, Schneider Electric
was well positioned to meet these
replacement needs.
Schneider Electric contracted out the
building of the prefabricated switchroom to
switchroom builder Independent Portable
Buildings. Meeting the requirements of
Sydney Water, the 11KV switchboard
has protection on four sides to withstand
internal arc faults of 25kA for 1 second. If a fault does occur,
VAMP relays (a company of Schneider Electric) detect the danger
and isolate the fault quickly. This restricts the damage, as well as
helping to ensure the outage time is minimised.
Offering maximum user safety, a Schneider Electric MCset
indoor switchgear assembly was chosen for the project. The
switchgear meets all electrical distribution needs up to 17.5kV
and incorporates a set of innovative solutions including digital
protection and control systems. The MCset switchgear is designed
to operate with SF6 gas insulated circuit breakers or vacuum circuit
breakers. In this instance, Schneider Electric’s Evolis vacuum
circuit breakers were specified for the project. They have a long
service life and do not use Sulphur Hexaflouride (SF6) which,
if improperly disposed of, can have an environmental impact.
Schneider Electric 1500KVA Oil Filled Transformers are used to
step the power down from 11kV to 433V. This is a very reliable
system with a high electrical conductivity.
MiCOM P341 and Sepam T40 protection relays are used to provide
flexible and reliable power protection for the system. An ION 7650

intelligent metering and control device is
used on the system to provide accurate
measurements of voltage, current, power

Installed Base Services.
Combined, these elements create a
solution that allows the client to reduce
capital and maintenance costs, avoid
extensive civil construction work, minimise
disturbance to the plant operation during
installation and improve the safety of
equipment and personnel working
in the area.

management and manufacturing, and in turn, Schneider Electric
is using their local preferred contractors to supply the project with
general and critical materials and services. Schneider Electric has
been contracted for a period of three years.
Setting Up House
In order to house the workforce needed to complete the project,
The Gorgon Joint Venture is building a ‘construction village’ on
Barrow Island. The village will include resource facilities such as
accommodation, offices, kitchens and a gym for people stationed
to work on the Gorgon Project for a period of time.
To power this area, Schneider Electric is supplying a ‘Plug
and Play’ substation solution with engineered and integrated
33kV, 11kV, 6.6kV, 690V and 400V switchgear, control systems,
HVAC and power management systems. Once completed,
any switchroom sent direct to Barrow Island is cleaned down,
chemically treated and completely wrapped, to avoid any
contaminants entering the packaged units.

Providing a Solution
Equipment within Schneider Electric
E-Houses, transforms and switches
sequentially to ensure maximum power
availability to the network to maintain a
controlled electrical system environment for
the automated systems powering the plant.
“Schneider Electric is providing IEC
standard distribution products including
low and high voltage switchboards,
distribution transformers and prefabricated
substations. Most of this equipment is
being built off-site, including processing
modules - some of which are 30 metres
high and almost cover the same area as a
football pitch,” Robert Bagnall said.
Nine prefabricated Schneider Electric
buildings, measuring between 17 and 25
meters long by 6 metres wide, have been
supplied to power the village electrical
distribution network. The substations have
been constructed with glass reinforced
concrete. This material provides internal
arc protection, impact resistance and high protection resistance
against solar radiation. The substations feature Schneider Electric
HVAC, fire and gas detection, fire suppression, safety equipment,
small light and power, data concentrator, integration and fit-out of
the buildings; including free-issued variable speed drives (VSDs)
to bring generators up to speed and therefore save energy. The
substations have also been fitted with power management systems
to allow the client to keep track of their energy usage.
For the LNG plant, Schneider Electric has been commissioned
to supply 30 prefabricated buildings. These are between 22 and
28 metres long and are 7 metres wide. The buildings feature
Schneider Electric and third party equipment such as HVAC, fire
and gas detection, fire suppression, safety equipment and facilities
for small light and power outlets.
As well as reducing the environmental impact by cutting back the
on-site work required, the technology within the substation allows
Schneider Electric to offer a compact footprint; a design which
promotes hazard reduction, complete automation of the equipment
supplied and compliance to local codes and standards.
Protection, control and interlocking system designs were
customised specifically for the project, and Schneider Electric
Power Management System solutions have been installed to
ensure the LNG plant has continual functionality.
Integrating with the Schneider Electric hardware is a Schneider
Electric PACiS Automation system. The system is designed to
retrieve information from the field. The PACiS Operator Interface
provides The Gorgon Joint Venture operators with access to
information such as the rate of flow, which areas are in operation
at particular times, as well as providing alerts when a problem
occurs. The products were all part of a solution which was
specifically designed for the Gorgon Project.

designed to run and monitor critical
equipment, for the Chevron-operated
Wheatstone Project in Western Australia.
The contract value is estimated at
AUD$189 million and commenced
in July 2012.
The contract, one of the largest ever
undertaken by Schneider Electric will
see the majority of the work completed
in Australia and will support over 230
Australian jobs, with around 143 located in
Perth. Over 80 per cent of the Schneider
Electric employees appointed to work
on the project will be part of the ongoing
project management role.
Stephen Coop, Managing Director,
Schneider Electric Pacific Zone said,
“Schneider Electric’s Wheatstone Project
contract win is the culmination of many
years working in the Australian market. We
bring to this project a combination of global
and local expertise that helps power the oil
and gas industry.”
“As part of the agreement, Schneider Electric will supply the
Wheatstone Project with 13 prefabricated, customised and
integrated ‘plug and play’ substations. Prefabricated substations
are a vital element to projects such as Wheatstone due to the
growing complexity and operational requirements of oil and gas
extraction projects. The substations are custom built offsite to
meet the needs of our customers and delivered to any location, no
matter how remote.”
The substation design will take place in Brisbane, with
construction, final integration and testing being carried out in
Perth. The largest substation planned for delivery as a single piece
will be in excess of 70 metres long by 28 metres wide, weighing
around 590 tonnes.
The prefabricated substations will feature leading Schneider
Electric products including medium voltage switchgear, UPS
(Gutor) and low-voltage components. All technology has been
designed and engineered to comply with Australian Standards,
hazardous area standards and the Building Code of Australia. The
13 prefabricated substations, totaling around 9000 square metres,
will each be equipped with a HVAC system, MV and LV control
panels, VESDA fire protection, 230V A UPS, DC batteries and
UPS’s and hazard area related battery rooms. Additionally, a total
of seven MV and 45 LV switchboards and a power management
system will be implemented across the entire site.

  • 20. 20 Energy Projects and Services Capability Statement In line with this, the company is undertaking a number of major upgrades to improve the capacity and reliability of the Warriewood Sewage Treatment Plant. Through Transfield Services, Sydney Water has chosen Schneider Electric to design, manufacture, supply and install new switchgear for the project. A number of requirements were specified for the project, including the use of environmentally safe products, connectivity to the existing SCADA system and safety features for those using the system. Schneider Electric was able to fulfill all of these aspects and come up with a complete integrated solution. Switchgear Upgrade for Better Monitoring and Measurement While Transfield Services, leading providers of asset services, was upgrading other areas of the Warriewood Sewage Treatment Plant, it was noted that the 11kV high voltage switchboard was in need of replacement. Transfield Services contacted Schneider Electric to supply new product, which would increase the safety and reliability of the switchgear. With their extensive product range, engineering base, project management experience and synergistic capabilities, Schneider Electric was well positioned to meet these replacement needs. Schneider Electric contracted out the building of the prefabricated switchroom to switchroom builder Independent Portable Buildings. Meeting the requirements of Sydney Water, the 11KV switchboard has protection on four sides to withstand internal arc faults of 25kA for 1 second. If a fault does occur, VAMP relays (a company of Schneider Electric) detect the danger and isolate the fault quickly. This restricts the damage, as well as helping to ensure the outage time is minimised. Offering maximum user safety, a Schneider Electric MCset indoor switchgear assembly was chosen for the project. The switchgear meets all electrical distribution needs up to 17.5kV and incorporates a set of innovative solutions including digital protection and control systems. The MCset switchgear is designed to operate with SF6 gas insulated circuit breakers or vacuum circuit breakers. In this instance, Schneider Electric’s Evolis vacuum circuit breakers were specified for the project. They have a long service life and do not use Sulphur Hexaflouride (SF6) which, if improperly disposed of, can have an environmental impact. Schneider Electric 1500KVA Oil Filled Transformers are used to step the power down from 11kV to 433V. This is a very reliable system with a high electrical conductivity. MiCOM P341 and Sepam T40 protection relays are used to provide flexible and reliable power protection for the system. An ION 7650 > Case Study Increased Safety and Reliability for Sydney Water Sydney Water has recently implemented a Renewable Energy Generation Program, as part of its commitment to being carbon neutral for energy and electricity use by 2020.
