Energy from the sun or chemicals is absorbed by producers like plants and algae and enters an ecosystem. This chemical energy is then passed between organisms as some eat others, forming food chains and trophic levels with herbivores consuming producers, and carnivores and omnivores consuming herbivores and other carnivores. Energy is lost at each transfer between trophic levels as heat and only about 10% is transferred to the next level.
