Energy Conservation Project: Fuel Consumption
The Questions? How much fuel do I consume? How much fuel could I save by riding my bike to work? What else can I do to conserve fuel?
Research Approach: Log all vehicle use for one week. (Distances & Destinations) Calculate my truck's fuel economy to determine consumption. Use mapquest .com to find the distance from home to work. Use that information to calculate savings from biking. Look on the web for tips to reduce fuel consumption. Analize collected data for other ways to become more efficient.
Results: I drove a total of 45.78 miles in one week. I used 2.86 gallons of gas. The total cost was $10.30. By riding my bike to work I would have saved $4.00. I could save additional money by changing my air filter, or buying a car that is more efficient.

What If?
Conclusions: Minor lifestyle changes can have a huge impact on the environment! They will save you a lot of money! They can potentially make you a healthier and happier person!
Note: Calculations are based on a fuel economy of 16 mpg, and an average fuel cost of $3.60 per gallon.

The Future Electric & Hybrid Vehicles are very efficient and their performance is becoming similar to that a traditional vehicle. The Honda Civic Hybrid and the Toyota Prius Hybrid both get 40-50 miles per gallon. Fuel Cell Vehicles are coming soon! They run on hydrogen the most abundant resource on earth, and their only emissions are water and heat.
