5. Water Storage
● Water storage is a focus for the Mapleton
North Stake for 2010 – minimum 2 weeks
– 14 days x 1 gal/person/day = 14 gal/person
– This is MINIMUM reserve – not used until all
other sources are exhausted
– Suggest we have at least two 55 gal
drums/family (110 gallons)
– Water from a chlorinated municipal source will
not require pre-treatment if stored in clean
sanitized containers.

6. Food Storage
● Short-Term: We should build up a 3 month
supply of the food we typically eat
– Monitor your usage
– Plan out what you want
– Develop a plan to make it happen this year

7. Food Storage
● Long Term: In addition to the short term we
should work to build a long term supply of
basics that could sustain us if needed
– This is left very open to our individual needs
– www.providentliving.org
“For longer-term needs, and where permitted, gradually build
a supply of food that will last a long time and that you can use
to stay alive, such as wheat, white rice, and beans. These
items can last 30 years or more when properly packaged and
stored in a cool, dry place. A portion of these items may be
rotated in your three-month Ward Emergency Prep
th
supply.”

8. Learning From Others
● What can we learn from other tragedies – e.g., Haiti
– Typical communication down (phones, cells)
– Many roads impassible (broken, filled with rubble)
– Medical facilities tend to be overwhelmed
– Police, Fireman, Ambulance likely unavailable for
many hours, possibly days
– Water – a critical commodity – tough to get
– Food – no stores for days, possibly weeks
– Sanitation – surviving after you survived

10. What is a “Block”
● The “Block” system is based on the idea
that there is not one magic person
(government or other) who will come
checking on us after a disaster.
● We all need to take care of each other. First
in the local area (i.e. “Block”) then moving
out from there - ward - stake . . . .
● In our ward the blocks are about 10 families
● Block captains gather info for their block
and then report to the Ward

12. Communication to Block Captain
(CERT System)
● Color coded display in front of house
– Green = all is well, no help needed
– Yellow = need help but it's not an emergency
– Red = immediate help or critical care needed
– Black = deceased person(s) in the building
(combine with other ribbons)
– White = home is vacant (placed by others)

13. Communications
●
Mapleton 12th Ward will use “Family Band”
radio channel 12
● After Block Captains have identified the status
and needs of all families in their block, they will
radio to Ward Emergency Prep Coor. (WEP)
(Brother Jackson)
● WEP will gather info and get it to the Bishop
● Ward Communication Specialist (Brother
Perucca) will be with Bishop Coordinating
Communications with WEP and blocks.
