This document provides an introduction to the European Grid Infrastructure (EGI). It explains that EGI is a federated computing infrastructure that provides access to computing resources and data storage across over 30 European countries. EGI supports researchers from many disciplines through reliable ICT services and currently connects over 340 resource centers that provide over 435,000 CPU cores, 190 petabytes of disk storage, and 180 petabytes of tape storage. Key users of EGI include high energy physics, astronomy, life sciences, and earth sciences research communities.
