Our Lives … Downrange
It’s great knowing the
services we provide to
deployed service members
give them opportunities they
might not normally have.
With a new school year
beginning, it’s easy to feel
left out of the camaraderie
felt in traditional settings.
Every college student should
experience the scholastic
atmosphere that a fall
semester brings. Having fun
is one such experience every
student should have.
As the Criminal Justice class
in Bahrain shows, fun can be
had anywhere.

The new academic year has officially
started, and that means new classes,
new students and new teachers
throughout our education centers.
Qatar began this year by teaching
students how to save lives with one of
the classes in CTC’s EMT program.
An invaluable course of study, given
the type of work EMTs and
paramedics do, it prepares students
for an exciting and rewarding career
that is projected to provide substantial
employment opportunities.
The BLS Occupational
Handbook states that EMTs and
Paramedics jobs are expected to
grow by 23% (much faster than
average) from 2012-2022.
Central Texas College Among Most Popular Colleges for TA
“GI Bill – best thing that
ever happened.”

101st Airborne
Central Texas College strives to fulfill the needs of a global community
that consists of an enormous amount of military personnel. By
providing a vast range of options from online classes to face-to-face
classes held worldwide, CTC has become one of the most popular
schools for service members to obtain an associate degree.
Funding a college degree can be, in a word, expensive, and there are
many who simply have not had the chance to afford the tuition. Some,
if not all, of this burden is lifted for military personnel with the use of
tuition assistance and the GI Bill.
A recent Military Times magazine survey portrayed that CTC is the top
fourth college attended for all military personnel and second most
attended college for Army personnel using TA. Additionally, CTC is
the 28th ranked school for those using GI Bill.
We all contribute to the success of students graduating, so start this
new academic year knowing we’re educating those who need and
want it the most.

The onset of any new campaign can be a
slow start. This can be even more apparent
in extreme environments.
While work is underway to improve the
look of Arifjan’s first Facebook page,
adhering to guidelines with photographs,
we need you to help spread the word.
Remember that social media is an excellent
resource to execute open communications,
and the best way to get followers is
sharing the information.
If you need assistance with social media at
your education center, please contact

DANA JENSEN
TEST EXAMINER
Dana began his CTC career as a test examiner in
Bosnia. A year later he began work with the US Peace
Corps in the Republic of South Africa, working in the
province of Mpumalanga as a school and community
resource volunteer. Due to a few medical issues, he
decided to leave the Corps and teach ESL at a South
Korean English academy in Seoul.
After 9/11, the opportunity for retirement and decent
income lured Dana to Education Centers in
Afghanistan, where he began a nine-year stint with
CTC as a test examiner, automation technician, and
admin assistant in Camp Phoenix, Kandahar Air
Field and Camp Marmal.
When the contract ended, he found an ESL position
teaching lower primary students in Shanghai, China.
After nine months, he opted for another chance at the
Camp Arifjan Education Center in Kuwait.

Jack joins CTC as the site coordinator in
Camp Lemonier, Djibouti after retiring from
22 years of service in the Air Force. Military
life made him no stranger to living in
extreme locations, but he never dreamt he
would return to Djibouti.
In the time since his 2008 summer tour, he
noticed change as he remembered that the
camp was covered in tents, AFN was only
an antenna broadcast, paved roads didn’t
exist and the heat was extreme—heat being
the one constant.
He’s grateful to help our country’s service
members become doctors, paramedics,
structural engineers or even preparing for
admissions to a German university.
MENNAH ELSARRAG
TEST EXAMINER
Mennah returns to CTC Deployed Sites as the test
examiner in Camp As-Sayliyah, Qatar. She has had a
unique travel experience of not only visiting but living
and working in foreign countries, especially for only
being 24.
She was previously employed with CTC as the Field
Representative in Kandahar Air Field, Afghanistan—one
of our most intense locations.
Originally from New York, she’s an Egyptian-American
who furthers our efforts of supporting service members
in the Middle East. We wish her the best, especially when
missing the white New York winters.

Moving can be hectic, especially
to a new country that requires
strategic planning with the many
different laws each country
mandates.
While we are all aware that
moving to deployed locations
involves distinct challenges, we
might not fully understand the
intense amount of work involved
in getting us here.
As the deployment coordinator
for CTC’s Deployed Sites region,
Ladell is the main contributing
factor in our successful transitions
to the Middle East.
Ladell spent a lifetime serving our
country as an Air Force MSgt-
security police officer at Y-12’s
national nuclear security complex
and now a CTC employee
assisting with military education.
Born in Florida, he’s lived the last
12 years in Europe continuing his
military advocacy work.
This includes using his three-time
Light-Heavyweight Champion
title as an amateur boxer to coach
service members, one of which
who competed in the recent All-
Army Boxing Team.
Let us take time to thank Ladell
for the many stressful hours he
spends ensuring our success.
