UXTAPOSING THE SOHO and NoHo neighborhoods’ sleek
mega-retail establishments from Zara to Prada, new brands are
opening their first New York retail outposts with a decidedly
bricks-and-mortar attitude.
These retail hotspots feature exciting elements like green
living walls, concrete shoe displays made with stones from a Long Island
beach, and Instagram galleries blended with whitewashed exposed brick
and reclaimed-wood walls from Brooklyn.

Rachel Comey
After a 14-year wait, designer Rachel Comey opened her
first store last summer, much to the delight of downtown
Manhattan’s style-savvy men and women. She enlisted
architect Elizabeth Roberts and decorator Charles de Lisle
to create a quirky, texturally rich space that takes hints
from Comey’s own apartment. Beneath a skylight stands
a concrete shoe display fixture made in part from stones
collected from both Comey’s favorite Long Island beach
and her denim-washing site. Custom burgundy leather
sofas, plush chartreuse velvet curtains, hand-molded brass
racks, exposed wood beams and cream-colored stucco
walls balance the hard-meets-soft Rachel Comey vibe.

Filson
This new store’s Old World relics and reclaimed décor add
a lot of personality to the Northwest heritage brand’s first
East Coast outpost, a 1,800-sq.-ft. shop nestled next to a
Beaux Arts firehouse building. Cult fans of Filson, which
kicked off during the Gold Rush years (yes, 1897), trickle
in for signature luggage, duffle bags and outerwear. But
unsuspecting customers also will be drawn in to discover
a wall reclaimed from the Williamsburg Domino Sugar
factory. An additional wall will transform seasonally—
Satoshi Kawamoto (aptly known as “Greenfingers”)
designed it as a green living wall.
