Drills
We must place the drills inside the plan for the season,
we are not using the same exercise at the beginning that at the end of the season
We also must know, when we should place the drill inside the session, some exercises
can be part of the warm-up, another one should be the main part of the session and
others, we can use it for cool down
Be sure about, what you are working on the drill, why you are doing this Drill, how you
can correct, evaluate and give it a progression and how the exercise is linking with
your system of play or your needs.
You should be able to explain all of this to your players
The drill is our tool to achieve our goals, to ensure the understanding of our
system of play and philosophy

Drills
Before to start a drill we need:
During the Drill:
Make Corrections on coaching points.
Adjust space and time.
Introduce provocation rules.
Stop the drill if you need to explain it
again or to correct some points.
But, have patience and give time to
the players to figure out.
Motived the players with positive
words and instructions
After the drill

Coach feedback
Workplace
The workplace must be clearly defined, using, if it is possible the lines of the
field to save time and to link the drill to the game, avoid to use many
markers or cones, takes time to put it on, and to collect it
In the case of Circuit Drill, be sure that each zone is clearly defined, have
enough space and distance with the next one, to ensure the work properly.
For possessions or Slides games we always start from the big to the small
area, adapting the space to the quality of our team, Don’t need to stop the
drill to make it bigger or smaller, just move the markers
BE SURE THAT THE WORKPLACE IS CLEAN AND SAFE
Drills
Safety first
Avoid potential risk
Check and clean the workplace
It is a coach duty to train in
a clean and safe
environment
Drills
Avoid potential risk
Dirty places
Slippery areas
Fences or borders near the pitch
Holes in the pitch
Weather conditions
Animals near the pitch
Mobile objects
Old or rusted equipment
Shin pads, sport shoes
Drills
Players involve
Make a drill for all the players you
have, occasionally, you can work with
specific works for the lines, but after,
put this job in a collective drill
Don't divide your team
between good and bad
players; The good ones will
help the bad ones to
improve
Include everyone
and change roles
often
Pay the same
attention to all the
players
Drills
Drills
Drills
Divide your team as you need it for the drill, quickly and dynamically.
Have the bibs ready to distribute.
Think and decide it in advance.
Use floaters, overload or equals teams according to the coaching points
Players involve
Coaching points
Must be clearly define in the drill
We keep our focus on the coaching points over the other situations of the drill
Drills
It is the concepts we decide to work on the drill,
Pass, control, shooting, play wide etc.
Coaching Points
Offensive:
Pass
Possession
Play wide
Play from the
back

Play deep

Defensive:
Tackle
Interception
Marking
Pressure
Retreat the

Goals
The duration of the drill can be define by time or by achieving goals
Finishing in 1vs1 situations, 10 passes in a possession, win a game etc
Different goals can help to works on various concepts in the same
drill but, always we must achieve the goals of the exercises,
following the coaching points
Drills
TIME
The time is directly linked to the physical condition and to the intensity
of the drill, more intensity, less time and backwards,
less intensity, more time
Be sure to have a pause according to with the drill
Depends on the break we will work on different concepts
For Example, Pure Speed workout needs a 100% recovery pause
Drills
TIME
Reduce or increases the time if you think that you need it to improve the
quality of the drill but, respect the pause
Time and space and related to the physical condition workout of the drill
(more time and space=endurance; Less time and reduce space= strength)
If you assign 30min for one drill( possession, match, etc.)
do it in two series of 12 or 13 min + pause
The intensity will increase
Drills
Rules
Have rules will help us to ensure the coaching points in the drill
Same workplace, same time and same concept but with different rules
change the coaching points
How many touches we use, different parts of the body,
necessary conditions, time to do the drill, space etc.
Initiation Rules, Re-start Rules, Provocation Rules

Drills
Initiation Rules Re-start Rules Provocation Rules
This Rules are the
general rules of the
drills and allow us
to achieve the
coaching points,
The number of
touches, pass or
players involved,
etc.
These rules allow
us to work in
different concepts
or strategy inside
the drill, like
corners, pressure,
possession, etc.
It is a change that
we introduce to
achieve different or
specific goals
inside the
drill(change
number of touches,
change conditions,
etc.)
Rules
Initiation rules
The team with the
ball must do ten
passes, and the two
floaters must touch
the ball before to go
to the other half and
score, three touches
per player, the team
without the ball can
press only with four
players
When one team recover the ball must to
start over from the own half, after a goal
the same team start over from the keeper,
we have a corner every time the ball goes
out, against the team of the half where the
ball goes out.
Re-start rules
Provocation rules
After some time
and, for a while, the
goal is only valid if
the pass is coming
from the floater, at
some point, one
team is allowed to
press with all the
players and free
touches for the
other team
Equipment
Be sure that you have enough and in good condition equipment to develop your drill
Use your imagination if you don't have enough equipment
Adapt the drill to the equipment you have
Drills
Take care and collect all the equipment after the drill

Drills
We use this drill to work on the pass, movement and footwork
We can use it as the last drill of warm up to connect with the first drill of the session
- a rondo, possession, match etc
Patience is essential in this drill, always takes time to learn new routines,
once they learn we can complicate it, fewer touches, different positions etc.

Rondos
We use these kinds of drills after warm-up or inside the warm-up
These drills are directly linking to the combinative style of play
There are different kinds of rondos, and we can work different concepts
But always related with the pass and the pressure
We can change the time, space, number of touches

Supporting game, moving, marking, press, make decisions
We use these kinds of drills after warm-up or inside the warm-up
Start with a big pitch and more touches and then reduce the area and the touches
You can use the players in their positions.

Drills
In these kinds of drills, we will work specifically
the technique, tactic or physical condition.
Use it after the warm-up or in the end of the week (only
tactical-technical), when the next match is close; we want
that the players work in the concepts when they are at their
100% and apply later on the competition
Often related to specific lines' work or specific games situation

Applications
We should use this kind of drill often as
we have many 1vs1 situations on the real game.
Use it after the warm-up,
it is a high-intensity drill, and the players should be at 100%
Don’t always use the same drill for work 1vs1 situations

(cross, shooting, clearance, press etc…) to work on specific tactic
situations (play wide, counter-attack, create free space etc.)
We can use before the training match to use it afterwards
or we can use it also before the cool-down
It will always be related to our idea of play
Must do it at real time and real intensity to apply later on the game

We use this kind of drill as a principal part of the session.
It helps with high-intensity play, stamina, press, play fast, finishing, 1vs1,

We can apply special conditions to work on different concepts
The most common is use the double penalty box

Conditional Matches
We use Conditional matches as a principal part of the session,
the players should be ready to solve the particular conditions of the drill,
to think clearly and fast,
so, avoid doing Conditional Match if the players are too tired
Don’t overload the match with many conditions
Conditions should be clear and linked with the aim of the drill,
like always, go from the simple to the complicated

Drills
Work on the strategy drills separately, first without opposition and then,
when the movements are precise, with mild resistance.
Once you been working on them, and the movements are precise,
use it at the training matches
We can use special rules for it, example: take a corner shot before the goal kick
Work offensive and defensive Strategy, Simple better than complicated
Use it at the end of the week and the end of the session or before the training match

Matches
We use the match at the end of the week or the end of the session, to see if the
players apply the concepts worked during the week or the session
Don’t always use 2 or 3 touches rules or you will create a habit for the players,
let them play with freedom to decide.
The match is the best way to release the pressure
and to express themselves through the game,
Also to try the new skills
