This document summarizes the sustainable design features and renovations of a homeowner's property in Australia. They moved to a house with better solar orientation, adding an extension with north-facing windows. Renovations included improved insulation, energy efficient appliances and lighting, solar panels, rainwater tanks, and native plantings. Ongoing efforts focus on reducing energy and water usage, producing electricity, composting organic waste, and establishing vegetable gardens to live more sustainably.
The Transition Street Challenge is an initiative of Transition Newcastle. The Challenge brings neighbours together to discuss water, energy, food, transport and consumption/waste. Visit Transition Newcastle's webpage for more info (www.transitionnewcastle.org.au) or there is some background is at http://bit.ly/TNtsc. We showed this slide show at the celebration of our pilot program.

This document describes a case study of using Hadoop to collect and analyze wireless AP traffic data at scale. It involves setting up DDWRT routers to collect traffic records and transmit them to a JSP server using Avro RPC, which then stores the data in HDFS. This allows the real-world wireless traffic data to be analyzed using big data processing in Hadoop. The document provides details on configuring the different system components and libraries needed to implement this distributed data collection and storage pipeline.
1) The original home had poor insulation and orientation issues that led to overheating in summer and cold in winter. A new home was designed with better passive solar design principles.
2) The new home included renovating part of the original 1950s home, adding additional sections, and installing various sustainability features like solar panels, rainwater tanks, insulation, and energy efficient appliances to reduce energy and water usage.
3) Future plans include further improving insulation, installing external shading, and exploring additional ways to reduce energy and resource consumption.

The Kids' Vegies on the Verge is a vegetable garden for kids in our street. The garden, which has transformed relationships in the street, turned one in August 2014. These are some photos from the celebration attended by around 70 people. You can find out more about the garden at https://sustainingcommunity.wordpress.com/2014/06/24/what-is-kvv/
Transition Newcastle asked people to provide a message to the future or their vision for the future. Some responded with their hopes and dreams for what they want future generations to experience. Transition Newcastle invites others to join them in working towards a sustainable future.
Vladimir Alexiev presented ResearchSpace, a virtual research environment (VRE) based on the CIDOC CRM ontology. ResearchSpace aims to provide tools and services to support collaborative research projects for cultural heritage scholars. It aggregates data from various sources using semantic technologies and the CIDOC CRM ontology, allows semantic search of the data based on fundamental relations, and includes features for data analysis, collaboration, and web publication. The presentation provided an overview of Ontotext, the company developing ResearchSpace, described some of ResearchSpace's key capabilities, and discussed how the CIDOC CRM is central to ResearchSpace's approach.
Carbon compounds include macromolecules such as carbohydrates, lipids, nucleic acids, and proteins. Macromolecules are polymers formed from monomers joining together, such as monosaccharides forming polysaccharides or amino acids forming proteins. These macromolecules have important functions in energy storage, structure, and heredity.
The document discusses the benefits of exercise for mental health. Regular physical activity can help reduce anxiety and depression and improve mood and cognitive function. Exercise causes chemical changes in the brain that may help protect against mental illness and improve symptoms.
The document summarizes the SHA3 hash algorithm competition hosted by NIST. It provides details on the winning algorithm called Keccak, including its sponge construction, Keccak-f permutation, and the algorithms used in each round. Performance experiments show SHA3-512 is slower than SHA256 but provides stronger security guarantees. In conclusion, SHA3 will be the next hash standard and Keccak offers a secure design suited for hardware implementations.
