The Dutch DK Group has converted an old cargo vessel to test their Air Cavity System (ACS) technology, which aims to reduce ship fuel consumption by pumping air under the hull to create an air cushion. Extensive sensors will monitor the performance of the ship during sea trials to evaluate if the ACS lives up to promises of 15% fuel savings. Germanischer Lloyd is assisting with certification and measurements to objectively assess the viability and fuel savings potential of the new technology. If successful, ACS could be adopted widely and significantly reduce the industry's environmental impact and costs.
