1. THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS:

A CHILD WITH DOWN SYNDROME
Group 3
2. INTRODUCTION
Down syndrome is a condition in which a baby is born with an extra chromosome number 21.
The extra chromosome is associated with delays in the child’s mental and physical development,
as well as an increased risk for health problems.
This extra copy changes how a baby’s body and brain develop. It can cause both mental and
physical challenges during their lifetime. Down syndrome varies in severity among individuals,
causing lifelong intellectual disability and developmental delays. It’s the most common genetic
chromosomal disorder and cause of learning disabilities in children. It also commonly causes
other medical abnormalities, including heart and gastrointestinal disorders.Children with down
syndrome tend to respond with aggression, tantrums or “noncompliant” behavior as a way of
communicating a frustration or need. The behaviors are the result of the syndrome, not a
symptom of it. Noncompliance, wandering, sitting down and refusing to move, and aggression
were the most common difficult behaviors parents reported. This is also one of the reasons why
children with down syndrome are bullied because some kids think they are weird and different
from them.
