8: The Future of Search (Dominic Hodgson)Imran Ali
The document discusses the future of search and how it will evolve. It notes that currently 85% of searches are for factual information, 4% are for navigation, and 3% are for people from Swindon. It then lists several ways search could evolve, such as becoming location aware, integrating with social media like lonelygirl15, focusing on questions rather than just links, and being powered more by sources like Wikipedia. It concludes by saying the future of search will both empower users but also potentially make life more complicated.
The document discusses Wild Pockets, a game development platform that aims to democratize 3D game creation. It provides a free 3D browser-based game engine designed around shareable game assets, community features, and viral distribution through integrated monetization and analytics tools. Currently in early beta, Wild Pockets has over 4,000 registered developers, with 1,200 active developers monthly using its 25,000 game assets. The platform's goal is to help more developers compete by addressing challenges like market opportunities, funding, and experience.
Graphs are a useful way to visualize data and trends over time. The author shares 20 graphs from his life that illustrate meaningful events, relationships, and experiences. These graphs collectively tell the story of his life journey through highs and lows represented numerically.
The document summarizes the history and lessons learned from the Thinking Digital conference. It describes how the conference struggled financially in early years due to increased cash income targets. Extensive marketing efforts were undertaken but financial losses were still double forecasts. However, ticket sales later took off without explanation, selling out months early. Customer feedback was very positive. It was realized that word of mouth on Twitter was a major driver of referrals. The key lessons were to focus on great content and user experience, empower communities to spread the word, and rely less on traditional marketing.

The Equality Act: Shouldn't 'geek' be a protected characteristic? (Tim Medcalf)Imran Ali
A tongue-in-cheek look at how discrimination law is changing and how software suppliers may need to be aware of it when designing applications or bidding for work.
This presentation is designed to accompany Calder High's "Modern bridges, connectivity in the C21st" day on 1st July 2010.
The central question for the day is "Is the Internet a force for good", but I'll be focussing on one particular area - the ownership of content.
The document discusses the benefits of a new federation model that focuses on local politics and transparency. It suggests reconnecting people with democracy at the local level through evidence-based policy and transparency. This local approach promotes innovation, sharing of best practices between cities, and efficiencies through collaboration. The new model is likened to the "Fujiwhara effect" where smaller political units interact and influence each other, similar to how smaller weather systems merge under the right conditions.
This document tells a mysterious story from the 1970s involving puzzles, art, games and cow dung that captivated a nation. It references a burial, memories of a book, and a search for a solution, but provides mostly random text and leaves the overall plot and resolution unclear.
The document discusses how information and knowledge are increasingly mediated through changing technologies, making truth and reality difficult to pin down. It gives examples of how Wikipedia entries, memories, and even identities can shift and be unreliable. As more of our interactions occur through online platforms like Twitter, this disconnect between representations and reality can grow, with impersonations and artificial connections becoming easier. However, these mediums also allow improved sharing of learning on a timely basis. In the end, the effects of this flux and increasing mediation are still uncertain and need more confirmation to understand where it may lead.
Pst! The surreptitious beckoning of attention (Megan Smith)Imran Ali
The document discusses the benefits of exercise for mental health. Regular physical activity can help reduce anxiety and depression and improve mood and cognitive function. It also contains links and images related to games, suicide, and family photos.
The document lists 15 speakers at an event, including one speaker on safe sex with robots, two speakers on digital death, two on open data and city states, two on a pacific island, and three described as hat & glasses guys, along with a token Korean speaker. The event was Ignite Leeds in 2010.
This document discusses how changes in the video game industry could benefit women. Specifically:
1) Traditional game publisher business models are changing as digital distribution and new revenue models like subscriptions become more common. This reduces publisher control and opens opportunities for smaller, more flexible development teams.
2) The transition away from large publisher-controlled development toward more entrepreneurial and independent models could lower barriers to entry for women in the industry by allowing for smaller teams and reduced development risks.
3) More flexible development approaches may help address the traditional lack of gender diversity in game development by providing alternatives to the large-scale studio environment that has historically presented barriers for women.

zkStudyClub - LatticeFold: A Lattice-based Folding Scheme and its Application...Alex Pruden
Folding is a recent technique for building efficient recursive SNARKs. Several elegant folding protocols have been proposed, such as Nova, Supernova, Hypernova, Protostar, and others. However, all of them rely on an additively homomorphic commitment scheme based on discrete log, and are therefore not post-quantum secure. In this work we present LatticeFold, the first lattice-based folding protocol based on the Module SIS problem. This folding protocol naturally leads to an efficient recursive lattice-based SNARK and an efficient PCD scheme. LatticeFold supports folding low-degree relations, such as R1CS, as well as high-degree relations, such as CCS. The key challenge is to construct a secure folding protocol that works with the Ajtai commitment scheme. The difficulty, is ensuring that extracted witnesses are low norm through many rounds of folding. We present a novel technique using the sumcheck protocol to ensure that extracted witnesses are always low norm no matter how many rounds of folding are used. Our evaluation of the final proof system suggests that it is as performant as Hypernova, while providing post-quantum security.

Bram Verhoef, Head of Machine Learning at Axelera AI, presents the “How Axelera AI Uses Digital Compute-in-memory to Deliver Fast and Energy-efficient Computer Vision” tutorial at the May 2024 Embedded Vision Summit.
As artificial intelligence inference transitions from cloud environments to edge locations, computer vision applications achieve heightened responsiveness, reliability and privacy. This migration, however, introduces the challenge of operating within the stringent confines of resource constraints typical at the edge, including small form factors, low energy budgets and diminished memory and computational capacities. Axelera AI addresses these challenges through an innovative approach of performing digital computations within memory itself. This technique facilitates the realization of high-performance, energy-efficient and cost-effective computer vision capabilities at the thin and thick edge, extending the frontier of what is achievable with current technologies.
In this presentation, Verhoef unveils his company’s pioneering chip technology and demonstrates its capacity to deliver exceptional frames-per-second performance across a range of standard computer vision networks typical of applications in security, surveillance and the industrial sector. This shows that advanced computer vision can be accessible and efficient, even at the very edge of our technological ecosystem.
