Derek Espinoza is an undergraduate student at Portland State University studying environmental science. His research focuses on increasing the spatial resolution of air quality monitoring to better understand human exposure to urban air pollution. He has experience with air quality monitoring equipment and positive matrix factorization modeling. Espinoza has worked on various research projects and presented his work. He is also president of his university's chapter of the American Outlaws soccer support group and has other leadership and work experience.
To address air pollution, cities will need to work in coordination with nearby cities and at the regional level. This seminar will highlight key lessons from the Convention on Long-Range Transboundary Air Pollution (LRTAP) that can help cities integrate airshed governance strategies into their air pollution management plans and policies.

Current Research Interests
My current focus is on increasing the spatial resolution of air quality monitoring in order
to understand the impact of changing emissions, land-use policies, and climate on sub-
populations within the urban environment. This will lead to an improved understanding
of human exposure to urban air pollutants.
Skills
Knowledge of atmospheric monitoring equipment and methods, e.g., mass spectrometry,
gas chromatography, particulate matter sampling, Gaussian plume distribution, and
positive matrix factorization.
