Greece has a temperate climate with mild winters and hot, dry summers. Some common Greek foods include dolmades, spanakopita, tzatziki, kalamaria, and octopus. Greece was home to the original Olympic Games which were held every four years in Olympia to honor the Greek gods Zeus and Hera until they were banned in 393 AD. Important Greek mythological figures include Aphrodite and Zeus. Greek music is divided into folk music of the mainland and islands as well as popular "bouzouki" music performed in taverns. Major attractions in Greece include the Temple of Apollo and the Devil's Bridge.

4. Olympics Once every four years, men from all over Greece came to compete in a great athletic festival in Elis, in western Greece (Women were not allowed to compete). This was called the Olympic games because the place was called Olympia. It was a religious festival to honor the Greek gods Zeus and Hera. We don't know when men first began celebrating the Olympic Games, but they were certainly already doing it in the time of Homer, by 776 BC. And they were celebrated from then on, every four years without fail, until people converted to Christianity and the Roman Emperor Theodosius banned the games in 393 AD.

5. Greek Mythology APHRODITE (a-fro-DYE-tee; Roman name Venus) was the goddess of love, beauty and fertility. She was also a protectress of sailors ZEUS (zoose or zyoose; Roman name Jupiter) was the supreme god of the Olympians. He was the father of the heroes Perseus and Heracles, the latter of whom once wrestled him to a draw.

6. Greek Music The music of Greece falls into two main categories: folk (or regional music) and popular music. The folk music is divided into the mainland music and the music of the islands. Popular music is often referred to as "Bouzouki" music, emerging from the seaport taverns and spreading quickly to all parts of Greece. (The Bouzouki is the guitar/mandolin type instrument you'll find in any Greek band).
