This study aimed to document the distribution, population size, and threats of Cycas thouarsii in Mozambique to inform a non-detriment finding for trade under CITES. Field surveys and interviews found:
- Historical records reported C. thouarsii in central/northern Mozambique, but only as cultivated plants.
- Approximately 200 adult females were estimated nationwide, with the tallest (7m) in Quelimane. Each can produce many leafy sprouts for propagation.
- All observed plants were female. No wild or male plants were found.
- Erosion was identified as the main threat, having destroyed a planted population at Timbue.
