Scoliosis
What is Scoliosis?
Scoliosis describes a lateral curve of the spin, including some vertebral rotation. Although most curves are
small, some can be progressive and lead to spinal and postural deformities and sometimes pain in later
life.
What causes Scoliosis?
There are genetic risk factors for scoliosis, but there are no confirmed causes of scoliosis development.
Poor Posture, carrying backpacks, and choice of mattress have not been shown to cause or influence scoliosis.
Screenings
Why should children be screened for Scoliosis?
Scoliosis often develops rapidly in preadolescence or adolescence. The condition is usually painless, so
there maybe no other symptoms to indicate a developing scoliosis. Pre-teens and teens often favor loose
clothing which may conceal visual indications of a scoliosis.
2 zucchinis, sliced
When should children be screened for Scoliosis?
250g punnet cherry tomatoes, halved
Girls should be first checked around 10-12years old. Boys should be first checked around 11-13years old.
Earlier detection and intervention has been shown to lead to better long term outcomes for the patient.
1 leek, trimmed, halved lengthways, sliced
Prevention & treatment
1 red onion, cut into wedges
2 garlic cloves, skin on
Is there a way to prevent Scoliosis?

There is no known way to prevent a scoliosis from developing. The best known way to prevent a scoliosis
from worsening are early detection and prompt treatment.

A pain in the
bum
There has been no long-term study showing that these practitioners treatments and adjustments alone
can improve a scoliosis or prevent it from progressing. There are specific scoliosis rehabilitations methods
and scoliosis braces available that do have good supporting research as effective treatments. Osteopaths
and Chiropractors do play a very important role in scoliosis detection, management and addressing pain
and posture associated with the scoliosis.

2. Are your joints wearing thin?
Do you experience swollen and painful joints? Do
your knees, hips and knuckles feel like they are on
fire? Are you finding it harder to be active and agile?
These complaints are common symptoms of arthritis.
The word arthritis, when translated from Greek
means “joint inflammation. There are many different
types of arthritis, the most common being osteoarthritis. Osteoarthritis is a debilitating condition
that is commonly seen in middle aged and older people; the constant pain and reduced mobility can
make simple, every day task more challenging and
greatly impair quality of life
The impact of Arthritis
Osteoarthritis is a slowly progressing disease that
involves degradation of soft cushioning around the
joints. It can lead to significant pain and inflammation in the joint, as well as loss of movement. The
condition commonly targets the hips and knees,
however many smaller joints such as the fingers and
spin can also be affected. Unfortunately, the damage
may already be done by the time
you notice discomfort. With the
aid of quality nutrients, the symptoms of arthritis can be reduced
and managed more effective, enabling you to do things that may
have been previously limited.
Nutrients for Knees and Hips
The following nutrients are fantastic ways to provide
therapeutic benefits to help alleviate pain, swelling
and inflammation in your joints:
Glucosamine: is a key building block for your joints. It
stimulates the production of substances which lubricate and act as shock-absorbers for the joints. Glucosamine encourages the rebuilding of cartilage that
has been damaged and can be used as long-term
support to protect against joint degeneration.
Gelatin: Supports healthy joint structure and connective tissue repair. Gelatin may help reduce the pain
of osteoarthritis and reduce requirements for pain
relief medication. Patients with osteoarthritis noticed an increase in mobility and strength in affected
knees after gelatin supplementation.

anti-inflammatory properties, MSM is an essential
building block especially for joints and cartilage.
Combining glucosamine and SMS has been shown to
be superior compared to using either nutrient alone,
resulting in greater reductions in the pain and swelling of osteoarthritis.

Looking after your joints
Adopting the following simple dietary and lifestyle
tips; can help keep your joints healthy and happy for
years to come:
Stay active. Exercising is essential to keep those
joints mobile so try activities such as swimming ,
walking, yoga and daily stretching as these are
great ways to keep your joints moving
Maintaining a healthy weight is essential for supporting joint health. Carrying extra weight can put
pressure on your joints moving, especially hips
and knees.
Enjoy at least 2L of pure water each day. Reduce
caffeinated beverages to one or two per day and
minimize alcohol intake.
Eating a diet that is full of anti-inflammatory foods
can optimize your long-term health and vitality, as
well as support your joints from top to toe. Aim
for a diet plentiful in fruits and vegetables, unrefined grains and protein-rich foods such as fish,
poultry, nuts and seeds. Also remember to limit
lean red meats and sweets.

and supplements to minimize your osteoarthritis symptoms, talk to Healthwises’ Naturopath,

A pain in the butt
The benefits of using epidural corticosteroid injections to treat sciatica
pain are small and have no long –term effects, according to a new study
by researcher as The George Institute, Australia. The review looked at
published studies to determine the efficacy of epidural corticosteroid injections for reducing pain and disability from sciatica, a common type of
low back pain that may irradiate below the knee and is often accompanied by tingling or numbness.
According to professor Chris Maher from The George Institute, nonsurgical treatment options commonly offer little relief, so more invasive
procedures such as epidural corticosteroid injections have become increasingly popular. “our reviews shows, for the first time that the benefits
of using epidural corticosteroid injections for treating sciatica is minimal
and short term,” Professor Maher says. “Epidural corticosteroi injections
are an invasive procedure and have rare, but potentially serious complications. The findings from this review will help patients and clinicians make
informed decisions about whether to proceed with this treatment.” Since
symptoms of sciatica can be debilitating and persistent, patients with sciatica are nearly four times more likely to have back surgery compared to
those who have persistent low back pain only. Musculoskeletal conditions are a leading cause of death and disability worldwide and a major
contributor to the cost of healthcare. Low back pain is the most preventable and costly musculoskeletal condition in Australia, affecting 1.9 Million People and costing $4 billion per annum in healthcare.
