Music Internship: Writing an Album by David Newton
1. Music Internship: Writing an Album
Summary
My internship this summer involved
writing and recording a CD with Dr
Nathan Link and fellow student Jimmy
Hawkins. We composed, recorded, and
mastered a total of 9 tracks to go on
our final album. I wrote the first five
tracks, which are in a contemporary
style, and Jimmy wrote the following 4
instrumental,
minimalist
pieces.
Although our work was largely
individual, we collaborated for ideas
about songwriting and mixing. We
spent most of the summer at Centre’s
campus during our internship.

Software and Equipment
The recording software used on this project was
Sonar X1 for the live recording, and Cubase for some
of the instrumental tracks. For the live recording we
used a Nord keyboard, Korg synthesizer, Epiphone
acoustic guitar, Fender Stratocaster, and Tama drum
set in addition to microphones, cables, and other
hardware.
Special Thanks
I would sincerely like to thank
Centre College and the Brown
Foundation for supporting me for
the internship and for making it
possible. I would also like to
especially thank my advisor,
Professor Link, for allowing me to
work with him this summer.
