New York City is home to around 9 million people and is situated on the East Coast of the United States. It was originally discovered by Europeans in 1524 and called New Amsterdam, later joining the United Kingdom in 1664 and being renamed New York. New York has been an important American city since the country gained independence in 1783 and is larger than the capital Washington D.C., with famous sports teams like the New York Knicks basketball team and New York Yankees baseball team playing in iconic venues like Madison Square Garden and Yankees Stadium.
