Data journalism is a journalism specialty
reflecting the increased role that
numerical data is used in the production
and distribution of information in the
digital era.
Or
Data can be the source of data journalism, or it
can be the tool with which the story is told—or
it can be both .
What is data journalism ?
2
JensMartensson
Data journalism is a new set of skills for
searching, understanding and
visualizing digital sources in a time that
basic skills from traditional journalism
just aren’t enough.
Why data journalism?
3
JensMartensson
• tell the complicated stories more easily or
clearly than relying on words.
• enhance their stories
• Data is a great source for journalists to use
because it lends credibility to their sources
and can help explain complex topics to the
public in a visual way.
• math can tell us things that traditional
reporting cannot
Importance of data journalism

Example: questioning figures
• A government says that X percent of children
are living in poverty and that the numbers
have fallen over the last five years. How do
they measure this? What do they define as
poverty? What age range does their definition
of a child fall within? Have the measurements
of poverty changed over the years, meaning
that the claim that it has fallen over the past
five years is a distortion?
• math can tell us things that traditional
reporting cannot

data journalism in BBC
BBC divides data journalism into three broad types that often overlap:
1.Traditional investigative data journalism, often called CAR - finding stories
in the data – with or without visualization
2.Using the data to tell a story or explain a complex problem – this will
involve graphics or visualization .
3.Providing a service or a tool that tells the reader something personally
relevant - school score cards / tables or simple financial tools and
calculators.
