Emily Goldberg analyzed over 100,000 tweets about ISIS to understand where discussions were focused. Word clouds of the tweets showed most words referred to locations of countries rather than events. A map tracking geo-located tweets found only eight unique locations mentioned. Goldberg argues this focus on location gives ISIS a perceived global presence and influence, though their direct operations may be more localized. While the data shows ISIS is discussed worldwide, their physical operations appear centered in the Middle East and North Africa.
