Women and Alcohol: One Glass a Day Linked to Cancer
Even one small glass of wine or beer a day increases the risk of women developing breast cancer,
according to a new report. Even the experts are surprised by the results.
Bottom’s down: A new report finds that drinking even one glass of alcohol a day increases the risk of
developing breast cancer. The type of alcohol doesn’t matter—wine, beer and hard liquor all pose the
same risk.
She said the important message is that all types of alcohol are equally harmful. “I have this discussion
with patients all the time,” she said. “They say, ‘I only drink wine, or I only drink beer, and that doesn’t
count.’ This was very, very specific that it does.”
Still, she said it’s unrealistic to recommend to patients that they completely abstain from alcohol. “We
have to be reality-based,” she said. “Once we start saying “don’t do this, don’t do that,’ we lose
patients. They stop listening. So I think it’s about moderation.”
16. 5 That inasmuch as any man drinketh wine or strong drink
among you, behold it is not good, neither meet in the sight of
your Father, only in assembling yourselves together to offer up
your sacraments before him.
6 And, behold, this should be wine, yea, pure wine of the grape
of the vine, of your own make.
7 And, again, strong drinks are not for the belly, but for the
washing of your bodies.
8 And again, tobacco is not for the body, neither for the belly,
and is not good for man, but is an herb for bruises and all sick
cattle, to be used with judgment and skill.
9 And again, hot drinks are not for the body or belly.
17. “If you yield to anything that can addict,
and thus defy the Word of Wisdom, your
spirit surrenders to the body. The flesh
then enslaves the spirit. This is contrary to
the purpose of your mortal existence. As
you develop courage to say no to alcohol,
tobacco, and stimulants, you gain
additional strength. You can then refuse
conspiring men—those seditious solicitors
of harmful substances or smut. You can
reject their evil enticements to your body.”
President Russell M. Nelson,

21. Good for the Body
D&C 89:10 – Wholesome herbs— nourishing vegetables
and plants
D&C 89:11 – Fruit
D&C 89:12 – Flesh of beasts and fowls-sparingly
D&C 89:14-17 – Grains
D&C 88:124 – retiring to bed early and rising early—
getting adequate sleep
We should eat food that nourishes our bodies and use
moderation in the kind and amount of food we eat.
22. The Lord has not specified everything that we
should and should not partake of. ―Such
revelation is unnecessary,President Joseph
Fielding Smith said. ―The Word of Wisdom is
a basic law. It points the way and gives us
ample instruction in regard to both food and
drink. ... If we sincerely follow what is written
with the aid of the Spirit of the Lord, ... we will
know what is good and what is bad for the
body.

23. “There are many habit-forming,
addictive things that one can drink or
chew or inhale or inject which injure
both body and spirit which are not
mentioned in the revelation. Everything
harmful is not specifically listed.” He
added that “he who must be
commanded in all things … ‘is a slothful
and not a wise servant’ (D&C 58:26).”2

27. Mormonism good for the body as well as the soul?
Forget South Beach. Will the next great nutrition fad be the Provo Diet?
Mormon religious beliefs have gotten plenty of scrutiny in this election, but what about the Mormon
lifestyle? Turns out there is evidence that Latter-Day Saints are more likely than the rest of us to actually
live into their latter days.
Its strictures against alcohol, tobacco, coffee and tea are well known. But since 1833, Otterson said, the
church has also encouraged limiting meat consumption in favor of grains, fruits and vegetables.
“In addition,” he said, “practicing Latter-day Saints go without food and drink for roughly 24 consecutive
hours once a month as a fast. Subsequently, they donate to the poor what they don’t spend on meals.”
And the result? One 25-year- study of practicing California Mormons by James Enstrom and Lester
Breslow of UCLA found that Mormon men and women who were married, had never smoked, attended
church weekly and had at least 12 years of education had some of the lowest death rates ever reported for
any group followed for that long a time.
Mormon women in the study had a life expectancy of more than 86 years— five years longer than
comparable women overall; men lived to an average of more than 84 years, which was almost a decade
longer.

30. President Heber J. Grant: "No man who
breaks the Word of Wisdom can gain the
same amount of knowledge and
intelligence in this world as the man who
obeys the law. I don't care who he is or
where he comes from, his mind will not
be as clear, and he cannot advance as
far and as rapidly and retain his power
as much as he would if he obeyed the
Word of Wisdom." (CR, Apr 1925)

health affect your spiritual
health?
32. Elder Boyd K. Packer said: ―I have
come to know ... that a fundamental
purpose of the Word of Wisdom has to do
with revelation. ... If someone under the
influence‟ [of harmful substances] can
hardly listen to plain talk, how can they
respond to spiritual promptings that touch
their most delicate feelings? As valuable
as the Word of Wisdom is as a law of
health, it may be much more valuable to
you spiritually than it is physically.

36. Regarding D&C 89:21, anciently, just before the Exodus of the
children of Israel from Egypt, the destroying angel passed over
the Israelites’ firstborn sons because the people obeyed the
prophet Moses and marked their doors with lamb’s blood
(Exodus 12). Similarly, as we “[walk] in obedience to the
commandments, including the Word of Wisdom, the destroying
angel will pass by us, meaning we will be saved from spiritual
death and blessed with eternal life through the atoning blood of
Jesus Christ.

he Church urges men to have self-mastery to control their appetites, their tempers, and their speech. A man is not at his best when he is a slave to some habit. A man is not his best who lives merely to gratify his passions. That is one reason why the Lord has given the Church the revelation of the Word of Wisdom so that, even from boyhood and girlhood, young men and young women may learn to control themselves. That is not always easy. The youth today face enemies—false ideologies and immoral practices. … Sound preparation is necessary to meet and conquer these enemies.12
