Editor's Notes

  1. In his talk Love and Law Elder Oaks helped create a better understanding of what God’s love truly is and how it pertains to the Laws He has set forth. Many people are under the impression that God’s Laws contradicted his love for us and that if He truly loved us he wouldn’t condemn those for actions against his laws. Elder Oaks clearly explains “God’s love is so perfect that He lovingly requires us to obey His commandments because He knows that only through obedience to His laws can we become perfect, as He is. For this reason, God’s anger and His wrath are not a contradiction of His love but an evidence of His love.” Elder Oaks tells parents that as they go about raising there children that they must look towards God and take his example to heart in raising every child. Parental love doesn’t cancel out the laws of Heaven, but through the guidance of the Lord understanding of what needs to be done can be found.
  2. One of my favorite talks by Elder Oaks was the one he gave on desire. I never truly understood the effects our desires can have on are day to day lives tell this talk. He spoke on how simple desires can be over ridden by those that are much greater. Like hunger opposed to the want to fast. It is in developing desires for the eternities that we can better ourselves and make the best decisions. Elder Oaks reminded us all that, “We should remember that righteous desires cannot be superficial, impulsive, or temporary. They must be heartfelt, unwavering, and permanent.” Desires are the base of every action that we will ever make. It is in perfecting our desires that we can make better choices for the future.
  3. Elder Oaks came to my ward many years ago to talk to the youth. Though I don’t remember what he spoke on exactly I do remember how I felt while he was there. I remember that I had had a long and hard weekend, and I really didn’t feel like going to the fireside but I was leading the music so I kinda had to. I was able to sit up on the stand with him and I could feel the spirit radiate from him. He spoke with such power and confidence, it was the first time I had the opportunity to listen to a general authority speak while in the same room as them. After his talk he shook hands with everyone and chatted a little bit. You could see that he cared deeply about everyone that was there. That has always stuck with me and strengthened my testimony of the general authorities and how much he truly care about the members of the Church.
