2. IT Essentials 1 & 2 cover the fundamentals of com-
puter hardware and software and advanced concepts
such as security, networking, and the responsibilities
of an IT professional. Students who complete this
course will be able to describe the internal compo-
nents of a computer, assemble a computer system,
install an operating system, and troubleshoot using
system tools and diagnostic software. Students will
also be able to connect to the Internet and share
resources in a networked environment. The course
includes mobile operating systems, OS X, Linux, and
client side virtualization. Students gain real-world
experience in Microsoft operating systems, security,
networking, and troubleshooting through hands on
labs. IT Essentials is a Cisco Networking Academy®
course.
Each IT Essentials course is quarter-long. Students
receive 1 high school credit for each course.

Honors Java Programming 1 & 2 introduces students to
computer science and computer programming through
the Java Programming language. In Java Programming
1 students learn the fundamentals of Java programming
by first creating 3-D animations using Alice, then creat-
ing games using Greenfoot and finally coding in Java.
In Java Programming 2 students develop advanced pro-
gramming skills by building on the knowledge gained in
Java Programming 1. Students will design object-
oriented applications with Java and will create Java pro-
grams using hands-on, engaging activities. Based upon
student progress students will develop Java programs
that interface to real-world sensors using the Raspberry
Pi 3 mini-computer.
The courses are foundational classes for computer sci-
ence majors and non-majors alike, and when complet-
ed in sequence prepare students for the AP Computer
Science A exam.
Java Programming 1 & 2 are based upon the Oracle
Academy®
, Java Fundamentals and Java Programming
courses. Each Java Programming course is quarter-
long. Students receive 1 high school
credit for each course.

IT Essentials 1 & 2
Cyber Security Career Pathway Course Information
Honors Java Programming 1 & 2 Cyber Security 1-4
Cyber Security 1-4 is series of four courses that
provide students with a comprehensive understand-
ing of the information security challenges faced by
cybersecurity professionals. Students will gain in-
sights into the importance of cybersecurity, the
integral role of cybersecurity professionals in the
workplace and acquire the skills and knowledge
necessary to become industry certified as a Security
Professional. Through lessons, lab exercises, case
studies and projects, students acquire an under-
standing and appreciation of real-world cybersecuri-
ty challenges, policies and practices. Students will
explore the principles of data and technology that
frame and define cybersecurity. Foundational cy-
bersecurity principles, security architectures, risk
management, attacks, incidents and emerging IT
and IS technologies are addressed in the course
series. Students successfully passing each quarter-
long course will receive one high school credit per
quarter.
