I, Anel Clark, have successfully obtained my National Diploma in Biomedical
Technology (Clinical Pathology), Baccalaureus Technologiae Degree: Biomedical Technology
and MSc Medical Microbiology (Immunology main subject) at the Cape Peninsula University of
Technology and the University of Stellenbosch.
My degree and work experience has exposed me to various fields of research in the medical,
pharmaceutical and toxicological fields. During my studies, I gained experience in a clinical
pathology laboratory. In 1993 I started working as a medical technologist in a 24hour emergency
laboratory. In 1995 I became a research assistant at Essential Sterolin Products. I was part of the
team that developed Moducare®. After the launch of Moducare® in 2003, I started working at
Synexa Life Sciences as a Section head for the Flow and cell based assays, as well as the
Specialized Diagnostic laboratory. The company expanded globally and due to my family
responsibility, I could not travel to these laboratories for time periods up to 3 months. I was
offered the post as a Senior Scientist.

3. Experience
1) Medical Technologist: Dr Pennman, Kock and partners 24 hour emergency clinical pathology
laboratory February 1993-January 1995:
I worked in 24 hour emergency clinical pathology laboratory including Haematology,
Microbiology and Chemistry assays. Managed the laboratory on your own during night shift.
2) Research assistant employed by Essential Sterolin Products (Moducare®) August 1995 –
April 2003
I was part of the team that developed and manufactured Moducare®. I performed all the
laboratory assays from the development stages till the launch of the product in 2003.
3) I was offered the post as Section Head: Flow and cell based assays as well as the Specialized
Diagnostic laboratory at Synexa Life Sciences May 2003 – December 2014.
My main duties included:
Specialized Diagnostic Laboratory:
 Setting up the laboratory for SANAS accreditation
 Sample reception and processing, performing routine diagnostic testing (ELISA’s, flow
cytometry and rapid testing).
 Ordering reagents and do stock taking
 I was responsible for result entry and reporting, maintaining and adhering to requirements
for SANAS accreditation.
 I also have experience with the LIMS software.
Clinical Trial laboratory:
 Assisting clients with biomarker research using techniques to best analyse and interpret
what the client aims to find out by developing and validating assays.
 Responsible for method development and validation.
 Ensure sample acquisition and analyses are processed according to SOP’s and compile
data for statistical analysis.
 Responsible for quality assurance ensuring results have audit trails and adhere to rules
and regulations set by GCLP.
 Keep up-to-date with literature, research techniques and advances in the scientific field.
 Evaluate new kits and compile validation reports as well as prepare QA samples for
various techniques.
 In charge of GCP (ICH adherence) and GLP compliance, management and training of
staff and interns in the Flow and cell culture laboratories.

4.  Liaise with the client and project management compiling budgets and attending weekly
meetings.
My duties as a section head also included:
 Manage ± 12-15 employees
 Writing and maintaining Standard operating procedures(SOP’s)
 Performance reviews
 Scheduling leave and planning laboratory activities

 Yearly management review report writing
 Maintained laboratory for Accreditation
 Maintenance and purchasing of equipment.
 Checking and maintaining EQA systems
 Problem solving including technical problems
 Chaired weekly meetings
 Represented laboratory during Internal and External Audits
4) Senior Scientist: Flow and cell based assays, Synexa Life Sciences January 2015
The company expanded globally and due to my family responsibility, I could not travel to these
laboratories for time periods up to 3 months. They appointed a laboratory manager to manage all
the labs including the Cape Town based laboratory. I was offered the post as a Senior Scientist.
