The Second Crusade took place from 1145-1149 in Egypt and Iberia. Germany and France fought against each other while also fighting against the Turks, who had previously taken Jerusalem and slaughtered the population, prompting the Third Crusade. The crusade ended when the popes lost the support of the gentry crusaders. Afterward, Europe felt embarrassed by the loss and considered having Bernard of Clairvaux apologize to the pope.
