FIRST LAUGH
It was the coldest winter ever. Many animals died because of the
cold. The porcupines, realizing the situation, decided to group to-
gether to keep warm. This way they covered and protected them-
selves; but the quills of each one wounded their closest companions.
After a while, they decided to distance themselves from one another
and they began to die, alone and frozen. So they had to make a
choice: either accept the quills of their companions or disappear from
the Earth. Wisely, they decided to go back to being together. They
learned to live with the little wounds caused by the close relationship
with their companions in order to receive the heat that came from the
others. This way they were able to survive.
The best relationship is not the one that brings together perfect peo-
ple, but when each individual learns to live with the imperfections of
others and can admire the other person's good qualities.
The moral of the story is:
Just learn to live with the Pricks in your life.

Love alcohol too much?
But there is no chance you will give it up? - Listen to Emma’s Story
Hi,
I hope you're sitting comfortably because I have some shocking news. I'm about to embark on
a feat of endurance that makes a triathlon look like a primary school egg-and-spoon race.
I'm participating in Dry July - the charity that helps adults living with cancer all over Australia -
and have sworn off drinking alcohol for the whole month. That's 31 days where I'll actually be
accountable for my actions. Yikes!
In appreciation of my radical transformation, any generous support you may be able to offer
will go a long way to ensuring I don't fall off the wagon, as well as helping the many adults
around Australia that live with this terrible disease. (That's cancer. Not teetotalism).
My profile page link should you wish to make a donation and leave a message of support is:
http://www.dryjuly.com/profiles/emmaculnane
I hope you believe in the concept as much as I do and can help support me whilst I go Dry
this July!!
Thanks in advance for your kind sponsorship,
Emma

Alicia’s DATE!
Page 7
It all began one fateful dark stormy evening.....
Twas a set-up no less. A mutual friend showed him a picture of Alicia. Amid
his awe in the creature that was cast before his eyes on Face Book, alas he
noted Alicia’s star sign, Scorpio.
“It would never work” he cried. “As she is a Scorpio and so am I. We would
be too fiery together!”
Little did he know, their paths would meet again 3 weeks later, in the form of
an elevator located in none other than the ACT Health building..
As she saw him enter the building, many thoughts raced through her mind “I
wonder who he is? I hope he works here, he is HOT”. As if drawn together
by magnets, they hopped onto the same lift. Their eyes locked as he asked
her the location of a particular unit. “I don’t know” she replied, in a state of
intrigue and vague- out, as she realised twas infact he himself who she was
‘locked’ in the lift with.
Alas she was right! Twas he who she had encountered. Emails were ex-
changed and a date was promptly arranged thereafter.
Lunch date day arrived and a mass of confusion and conflicting advice en-
sued with Bern, Elspeth, and Kerry all offering their words of wisdom. “I saw
on Doctor Phil, they said to wait 90 days” Bern cried. “You have to treat ‘em
mean, keep ‘em keen”. “But I’m a nice girl” Alicia replied. Kerry added “If it
doesn’t work out, at least you know Scorpios have a massive attraction” (a
Scorpio herself).
The date was a great success.
He went overseas the next day.

I LOVE CANBERRA
What’s on?
http://www.inthecitycanberra.com.au/skate/
You should book tickets early to make sure you have a chance to
enjoy this unique opportunity. There are plenty of general skating
sessions that give you 1 ½ hours of fun and if you want something a
little extra why not book for one of the Show and Skate packages.
You get a fantastic themed exhibition skate show plus a 1hr skate
session.
The UrbanIce Skate & Dance session program is also now avail-
able.
Skate in The City is the place to be seen and the centre of winter
frolicking for Canberra in 2011. With up to six skating sessions a day
and a capacity for 200 skaters there’s room for everyone to enjoy the
thrill of open air skating day and night.
The licensed Apreś Cafe, hosted by the good people from To-
solini’s, is the perfect place to watch the action or enjoy a romantic
drink under the twinkling lights after a skating session

“...Delectable

You’ve all heard of quiche, croissants and fondue, but what about
choucroute, spätzle and saucisson? These were just some of the choices
on menus as we drove around France and Switzerland recently. We vis-
ited brasseries for meals, boulangeries for our daily baguette, patisseries
and chocolateries for “light” meals of delectable desserts and hole-in-the-
wall shops for fresh-cooked, coloured, coconut macaroons.
We sampled specialities of the region, such as Foie Gras (duck liver - I
couldn’t handle that but my husband loved it) and cassoulet (casserole
with white beans), food we knew already but which was served quite dif-
ferently such as a round of goat’s cheese served in berry puree or honey,
and food which wasn’t what it said such as strawberry spaghetti! (ice
cream pushed through a sieve which made it look just like spaghetti) and
choucroute, which wasn’t just sauerkraut which is what it translates to,
but a pile of sauerkraut topped with sausages, ham and bacon.

You don’t need to go to fancy expensive restaurants in France to get quickly prepared, ultra-
delicious meals and the cost is more or less equivalent to Australian prices. The best value meal
if you were really hungry was to have “le menu” which was a fixed price 2 or 3 course meal
with a few choices for each course. Prices averaged 11-20 euros ($15-28) in everyday type ca-
fes. Another bonus is that the cafes are often situated in the prettiest spots and are generally
very atmospheric.
Coffee was universally superb (strong and percolated) though you could never be sure how it
would come. The terms cappuccino, cafe au lait and cafe crème could provide a cappuccino as
we know it, a pot of coffee served with a pot of hot milk, a cup of coffee with a sachet of UHF
milk, or coffee topped with whipped cream (also known as café viennois and definitely worth
having). You could get coffee with alcohol (or alcool as they call it) all day at even the simplest
cafe. My husband sampled cafe fertig complete with schnapps after a hike back down from a
mountain hut we stayed in overnight (and his verdict was “pretty good”.)
French restaurants have had a bad rap in Australia since the introduction of “nouvelle cuisine”
but don’t let that put you off going to France! Here’s a few more yummy words for you: tarte
flambé, charlotte aux fraises, chantilly.... I have to stop – I am now sooooo hungry I can’t write
any more.

Did you know:
• 1 in 3 people will need blood?
• Only 1 in 30 people currently give blood?
If you, or one of your loved ones, have ever
needed blood, you already know how important
it is.
Many people are alive today because of Austra-
lia's generous and voluntary, unpaid blood do-
nors who give blood each week to help those in
need.
It's one of those things that we just expect to be
there for us, but only a very small proportion of
people donate.
People who give blood are united by their gener-
osity and the desire to give something back to
the community.

That's 31 days where I'll actually be accountable for my actions. Yikes! In appreciation of my radical transformation, any generous support you may be able to offer will go a long way to ensuring I don't fall off the wagon, as well as helping the many adults around Australia that live with this terrible disease. (That's cancer. Not teetotalism). My profile page link should you wish to make a donation and leave a message of support is: http://www.dryjuly.com/profiles/emmaculnane I hope you believe in the concept as much as I do and can help support me whilst I go Dry this July!! • 7. Alicia’s DATE! Page 7 It all began one fateful dark stormy evening..... Twas a set-up no less. A mutual friend showed him a picture of Alicia. Amid his awe in the creature that was cast before his eyes on Face Book, alas he noted Alicia’s star sign, Scorpio. “It would never work” he cried. “As she is a Scorpio and so am I. We would be too fiery together!” Little did he know, their paths would meet again 3 weeks later, in the form of an elevator located in none other than the ACT Health building.. As she saw him enter the building, many thoughts raced through her mind “I wonder who he is? I hope he works here, he is HOT”. As if drawn together by magnets, they hopped onto the same lift. Their eyes locked as he asked her the location of a particular unit. “I don’t know” she replied, in a state of intrigue and vague- out, as she realised twas infact he himself who she was ‘locked’ in the lift with. Alas she was right! Twas he who she had encountered. Emails were ex- changed and a date was promptly arranged thereafter. Lunch date day arrived and a mass of confusion and conflicting advice en- sued with Bern, Elspeth, and Kerry all offering their words of wisdom. “I saw on Doctor Phil, they said to wait 90 days” Bern cried. “You have to treat ‘em mean, keep ‘em keen”. “But I’m a nice girl” Alicia replied. Kerry added “If it doesn’t work out, at least you know Scorpios have a massive attraction” (a Scorpio herself). The date was a great success. He went overseas the next day.

Page 10 “...Delectable desserts and hole-in-the- wall shops for fresh cooked, coloured, coconut macaroons!’ You’ve all heard of quiche, croissants and fondue, but what about choucroute, spätzle and saucisson? These were just some of the choices on menus as we drove around France and Switzerland recently. We vis- ited brasseries for meals, boulangeries for our daily baguette, patisseries and chocolateries for “light” meals of delectable desserts and hole-in-the- wall shops for fresh-cooked, coloured, coconut macaroons. We sampled specialities of the region, such as Foie Gras (duck liver - I couldn’t handle that but my husband loved it) and cassoulet (casserole with white beans), food we knew already but which was served quite dif- ferently such as a round of goat’s cheese served in berry puree or honey, and food which wasn’t what it said such as strawberry spaghetti! (ice cream pushed through a sieve which made it look just like spaghetti) and choucroute, which wasn’t just sauerkraut which is what it translates to, but a pile of sauerkraut topped with sausages, ham and bacon. • 11. Page 11 You don’t need to go to fancy expensive restaurants in France to get quickly prepared, ultra- delicious meals and the cost is more or less equivalent to Australian prices. The best value meal if you were really hungry was to have “le menu” which was a fixed price 2 or 3 course meal with a few choices for each course. Prices averaged 11-20 euros ($15-28) in everyday type ca- fes. Another bonus is that the cafes are often situated in the prettiest spots and are generally very atmospheric. Coffee was universally superb (strong and percolated) though you could never be sure how it would come. The terms cappuccino, cafe au lait and cafe crème could provide a cappuccino as we know it, a pot of coffee served with a pot of hot milk, a cup of coffee with a sachet of UHF milk, or coffee topped with whipped cream (also known as café viennois and definitely worth having). You could get coffee with alcohol (or alcool as they call it) all day at even the simplest cafe. My husband sampled cafe fertig complete with schnapps after a hike back down from a mountain hut we stayed in overnight (and his verdict was “pretty good”.) French restaurants have had a bad rap in Australia since the introduction of “nouvelle cuisine” but don’t let that put you off going to France! Here’s a few more yummy words for you: tarte flambé, charlotte aux fraises, chantilly.... I have to stop – I am now sooooo hungry I can’t write any more. Many people are alive today because of Austra- lia's generous and voluntary, unpaid blood do- nors who give blood each week to help those in need. It's one of those things that we just expect to be there for us, but only a very small proportion of people donate. People who give blood are united by their gener- osity and the desire to give something back to the community.
