This document provides information about a farm located in Middle Granville, NY. It began in 2004 and has since expanded to include 14 acres of crops, 8 full-time summer employees, and annual income of over $450,000. The farm grows a variety of vegetables, including spinach, tomatoes, beans and peppers. It uses high tunnels and hoop houses to extend its growing season and produces baby and full-size spinach from September through February for local markets.
The first talk I did in Pennsylvania on winter growing, season extension, wholesale marketing, and food safety. This presentation, covered the basics of winter growing and specific requirements for growing greens in tunnels.
9 Crucial Health Benefits of Lettuce – Reasons Why Lettuce Consumption is Essential to a Healthier Body
Check out the full article here: http://servingjoy.com/health-benefits-of-lettuce/
Lettuce is an annual plant from the sunflower family that forms a rosette of leaves. It has four main types - crisphead, butterhead, loose-leaf, and romaine. Crisphead forms firm heads while butterhead has soft, waxy leaves. Loose-leaf does not form heads and romaine has loose heads with narrow leaves. Lettuce grows best between 12-20 degrees C and requires moderate watering. Pests and diseases include downy mildew, septoria leaf spot, and lettuce mosaic virus. Lettuce is harvested by hand and must be quickly cooled to prevent wilting.
This document provides an introduction to aquaponics, which combines aquaculture (fish farming) and hydroponics (soilless plant cultivation). It explains that aquaponics eliminates some of the negatives of traditional aquaculture and hydroponics by recycling the water and nutrients. The fish waste is converted by bacteria into plant nutrients, which are absorbed by plants grown hydroponically. Various components, configurations, and methods are described, along with examples of vegetables and fish that can be used. Guidelines are also given for cycling a new system and maintaining water quality parameters.
This document presents a research proposal that will analyze the cost benefit of producing lettuce with organic versus inorganic fertilizers in Techiman Municipality, Ghana. The study will evaluate the costs of production per acre and yields under different fertilizer treatments. Specifically, the research will compare the effects of poultry manure, NPK fertilizer, and combinations on lettuce growth and yields. Data on plant characteristics and economic costs will be collected and analyzed to determine which fertilizer method provides the highest benefit.

Food, Seeds, Cover Crops, Cut Flowers, Soil Building.
In colder zones growers use the summer hoophouse for all those hot weather crops that struggle outdoors! But if you can already grow melons, limas, okra outside, you may be left wondering how to make good use of that valuable covered space when it’s hot. As well as heat-loving crops, this presentation discusses cooling the hoophouse; using the opportunity to tackle soil-borne diseases or improve the soil and other uses like seed drying and storage.

year-round lettuce, growing and storing cold-hardy winter vegetables
The document provides guidance on planning succession plantings to ensure continuous harvests of vegetables throughout the growing season. It recommends planting crops like beans, squash and cucumbers in succession every 2-3 weeks to avoid gluts and gaps. Specific techniques include fitting succession crops into spare spaces in main crop plots, sowing different varieties of the same crop at the same time to extend the harvest, and using graphs to plan a sequence of sowings that provide an even supply. The overall goal is to plan successive plantings so that a new harvest is ready every 1-2 weeks throughout the summer and early fall.
Managing a high tunnel for maximum crop production is challenging as you must utilize all available space by rotating crops in and out and keeping track of planting schedules. The document provides planting schedules and crop rotations for cool and warm season crops throughout the year to maximize production from a high tunnel. Record keeping of plantings, harvests, and temperatures is important for effective high tunnel management.
