This document describes several entry-level computer positions including a computer operator who monitors systems and runs jobs, a help desk specialist who provides first-level support, a network wiring technician who installs cabling, a PC technician who sets up and troubleshoots hardware and software issues, a security administrator who manages user accounts, a database administrator who implements and maintains database software, a system administrator who maintains operating systems and infrastructure, a programmer who develops applications, and an analyst who analyzes business needs and recommends technology solutions.

1. Sample Entry-level Computer Operator – Monitors data center status, runs print and batch jobs
Computer Positions according to set schedules, trouble-shoots issues following established
procedures, changes back-up media.
Help Desk Specialist – Provides first-level support to end users for desktop
computers and server applications or hardware issues. Triages complex
problems and assigns to appropriate next-level support personnel.
Network Wiring Technician – Installs voice and data cabling and voice
communications systems. Assists with repairs and preventative
maintenance on systems and equipment.
PC Technician – Coordinates PC hardware and software set up and
configuration. Monitors, troubleshoots and responds to end user
technical computer hardware and software problems.
Security Administrator – Manages user accounts that provide staff with access
to network and application resources. Monitors user accounts for adherence
to security policies.
Database Administrator – Implements, monitors and maintains database
software. Resolves issues related to availability, operation and performance
of systems. Ensures effective data storage including development of back-up
and recovery procedures.
System Administrator – Evaluates, designs, sizes, implements and maintains
operating systems, servers and storage systems. Resolves issues relating to
data integrity, system performance, back-ups and infrastructure availability.

Analyst – Analyzes business activities and, in collaboration with user
departments and IS team members, translates business needs into
recommended IS software and hardware solutions. Works with
