The American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA) sent a letter to the Acting Commissioner of Customs and Border Protection (CBP) requesting that CBP take measures to ensure the safety of individuals passing through ports of entry and those held in CBP facilities during the COVID-19 pandemic. AILA recommended that CBP release vulnerable populations from custody, decrease populations in holding facilities, and implement processes to allow individuals to request extensions to stay in the country without risking overstay. AILA urged CBP to take steps to prevent the spread of COVID-19 in CBP facilities and ensure effective medical screenings at airports.
