Cordelia’s Letter
Dear Father,
I shall admit that thou has hurt me. But it was not because I did not receive thou lands. No, it was because
thou was angry at my response. My sisters, your daughters, our true enemies, they told you how much they
loved thee. I on the other hand said nothing. Yes, I said nothing. Perhaps you must of thought I did not like
thee. Though wanted I, your former favourite, your most loved, to give you the great love I had for thou in
return for the great love you had for I. Thou wanted I to utter these words of love from my lips. Thou
wanted to know that I loved thee. But I dashed your desire by saying nothing.
Father, I do not hate thou. You yourself already know that I love thee. You have known since I was a little
girl. Remember those past days. Those days with mother. How happier thou was, how sane thou was, when
she breathed on this world. Ah, those days with mother. I miss her. I know you miss her too.
Remember our walks through the woods. The sight of calming green, the cool breeze, the songs of the
song birds. We would go out and observe what Mother Nature had to offer. We would talk among us. Thou
would also tell me that I Cordelia would be the future Queen of England and I would marry a great leader.
Fate would reward me with a rich and wealthy life. You were so proud of I. I was proud of thou. My father,
King Lear, king of all of England! These forests, these lands, these people are all his. He deserved it all.
Fortuna and the Gods have helped him; they have given him a good life; they like thou. Thou and I were
always together. There was this bond between you and I. This bond between father and daughter. I loved you
according to this bond. This bond was of love.
But you were too blind to see it. Perhaps, it is because of your age. It is making thou mad. As thou gets
madder, life shall get worse thou. Thou has made my sisters, your daughters, into the queens of England.
Thou has given them land, power; you have made them too powerful. They are married to powerful rulers;
Regan is married to Cornwall, Goneril is married to Albany. Those two are too powerful. Regan and Goneril
vultures, power hungry. These vultures did not mean what they said before; they did not really love thou.
They lied. They lied to thou in order to gain your kingdom, your power. They want it for themselves. Now,
you were to them, a carcass of meat. They, the vultures, were circling around thou. But now they have went
descended near thou and stipped thou of thy flesh. All that remains are the bones.
They will get rid of thou. Do you believe that they are kind and loving enough to take care of thou; that
they will allow thou and your many knights into their dwellings. They don’t want to take care of an old man,
they are too selfish, to do so. They wouldn’t take care of a man whose becoming madder. Old and mad. That
is what you are to them. They do not want to associate themselves with you. Therefore, they will try to get
you killed. I hope I am wrong. Would Regan and Goneril be evil enough to kill their own father? They have
never been good children. They did not have the bond thou and I had. Perhaps, in the past, they truly did

love thou. Thou must have spent time with them. But I fear I am to blame for their vile nature, not Fortuna, I
alone. Regan and Goneril did not merely turn evil by themselves.
Thou loved everything about me, my look, my personality, the way I remind you of mother. I appreciate
the excessive love that thou has bestowed upon me. But this love has watered the seeds the envy. There was
envy in Regan and Goneril, envy over your love for me. You were always telling me how much you loved me,
you were always spending time with me, and you were always telling I how I would be the queen of England.
Regan and Goneril became envious over this excessive love, the time spent and your talk of making me a
queen; these princesses must have had dreams of being queens. They wanted your power for themselves. And
perhaps, they wanted to experience your love and they wanted to spend time with thou. They never really did
spend time with thou and I. But thou always told me that they didn’t want to, that they preferred to spend
time with each other. They themselves stated this. But father, I believe that you didn’t want to spend time
with them. Even when Regan and Goneril were with us, you always seemed to talk to themselves, you
seemed upset and angry with them. But with me the experience was much more better; you talked to me,
thou were more happy around me. Perhaps this all made Regan and Goneril feel envious and unwanted. They
felt unwanted by you. Thou wouldn’t show them your love so they must of thought that it was pointless to
spend time with thou.
They felt unloved by you. Regan and Goneril knew that thou loved I more than them. I was your
favourite. Your excessive love for I led them to be green eyed monsters; envious. But envy did not only grow,
so did hatred. Hatred for thou, father. If thou did not show them your love then they must have thought
someone unloving as you must be hated; that you deserve to be hated. I will speak true that I myself would be
envious and hateful if you had not shown me your excessive love. Perhaps, I would have been friends with
them. You have saved me but you have damned them. Thou as well are to blame for their vile nature. You
have created vultures. You have caused them anger and misery and in return they will bring you to ruin. They
will make you madder. Regan and Goneril are Brutus and Cassius; they will betray Caesar. They will kill thou.
Oh! Regan and Goneril are villains. But they don’t deserve to be villains. Had you shown your love to the
three of us equally, you would have three good daughters.
These two daughters of yours stated that they loved thou. But it did not make any sense. Thou did not
show them love; why utter it, why exaggerate it to you? The intention they had was to gain your power, your
country, and to make me both envious and hateful; they must of thought that they dashed my hopes and
dreams of being the queen of England once they obtained your power, lands, and they became the queens.
But though they have what they desired, they don’t have any love for the loveless father. If thou did not
show them love, why should they love thee to take care of thee? Sure, thou gave the two power. But I truly
doubt that to receive power from one does not bring love to the lovless father quickly. They did not love thee
so they could get what they desired. They now have what they have desired but they do not have love for you;
only hatred. The two of them are hateful enough to have your spark extinguished. They will have you sent to
Hades. Father, I fear for your life. I wish no misfortune upon you. But Regan and Goneril hang swords above
your head. So do their husbands. They will drop their swords. They will spill your blood.
But I will try to save thou, father. Right now, there French spies keeping an eye on thou. They report for
the French king and I if thou are safe. If thou faces any harm, I will have my husband send an army to
England to have you saved. We will administer justice to your enemies. Perhaps the Duke of Gloucester may
help you as well. Father, though you be hot headed and mad, you still have friends. Friends who care about
thou and are willing to save thou.

If Regan and Goneril and anyone as well reveal their true natures; revealing themselves to be vultures. If
they try to eat thou. Your friends and I will chase them and put them in cages! They will face Lady Justice and
the Furies! They will punish them for their crimes!
Father, Kent once said to thee, “See better, Lear.” You are blind. Blind to the illusions put before you. Fix
your sight. Distinguish what is reality and what is illusion. Puncture the illusions with reality. See with your
very own eyes your true friends including Kent and I. And see your true enemies, Regan and Goneril. See
reality in order to be saved.
