Digital image processing involves three levels of processing - low, mid, and high level. Low level processing takes an image as input and outputs another image, performing tasks like noise removal and sharpening. Mid level processing also takes an image as input but outputs attributes, with examples being object recognition and segmentation. High level processing takes attributes as input and outputs understanding, exemplified by scene understanding and autonomous navigation.
