Thomas Paine makes a case for American independence from Britain in his pamphlet "Common Sense". He argues that the cause of America is about more than just a single city or province, but concerns the interests of the entire continent and future generations. While Britain claims to be the parent country, it has not acted as a responsible parent would in making war on its own people. Paine challenges anyone to show a single advantage the continent gains by remaining connected to Britain, saying everything that is right and natural pleads for separation. He believes it is not possible for Britain to govern the continent justly given the great distance and Britain's ignorance of America. Independence, he argues, is in the true interest of the continent.
