Gold slipped to a one-month low on Monday on worries that physical
buying would slacken amid this week's holidays in major Asian markets.
The most actively traded contract, for April delivery, was recently down
$16.90, or 1%, at $1,650 a troy ounce on the Comex division of the New
York Mercantile Exchange. Futures fell as low as $1,644.10 a troy
ounce, the lowest intraday price since Jan. 7
Many Asian markets were closed on Monday for holidays, with major
gold trading hubs in Hong Kong, Singapore and Tokyo quiet. Chinese
markets will remain closed through the week for festivities related to
the lunar new year, which "could limit physical buying interest," Kitco
Metals analyst Jim Wyckoff said in a note.China is the No. 2 consumer
of the metal, behind India.
