COLOR
CTRA 13
VIOLET versus PURPLE
What is COLOR ?
Color is one of the most obvious
elements of art.
It can stand alone, as a background,
or be applied to other elements,
like shapes & line.
What is COLOR ?
Color creates a mood within the
piece and tells a story about a
brand.
Every color says something different
and combinations can alter that
impression more.
• Sir Isaac Newton first illustrated these color combinations
in circular form in 1666.
• The color wheel is used to display visually the relationships
between primary colors, secondary colors and
complimentary colors (colors directly across the wheel from
one another).
• Artists and designers use the color wheel as a reference to
create functional color schemes or sets of colors.
• Small groups of psychologists tout the emotional
effects that colors can have on people. Ancient cultures
in China and Egypt believed in healing by colors, a
practice they referred to as chromo therapy.
• Newton's development of the color wheel is generally
thought to have formed the basis for the creation of
color theory. Basic color theory studies how colors mix
and the effects of various color combinations.

SHAPE
CTRA 13
What is SHAPE ?
Shapes, geometric or organic add
interest.
Shapes are defined by boundaries,
such as lines or color.
Everything is ultimately a shape.
Using Shapes
Using shapes properly is one of the keys to
successful art & design.
It can determine its mood and message.
Soft, curved and rounded shapes are
perceived differently than sharp, angled
shapes.
Experimentation and altering of shapes within
a design can ultimately lead to desired result.
ACTIVITY 7 : Cut-Paper Composition
