Cloud Computing: What is it? Cloud computing has a very loose term and encompasses a broad range of different things SaaS- Software as a Service PaaS- Platform as a Service HaaS- Hardware as a Service Cloud computing is a general term for anything that involves delivering hosted services over the internet “ The Internet is serving up solutions for situations where it’s more important to get things done than to own the hardware or software that is needed to get things done.” Forrester Research defined cloud computing as “Cloud computing is buying IT capacity and applications as-needed from a utility service provider.”
Collaboration Just as important as cloud computing companies and individuals collaborating progresses cloud computing Collaboration has been looked over by companies Defined as: Interaction between multiple parties All parties are doing work and with a shared purpose or goal All parties will get something in return for their efforts Collaboration can be across boundaries Increases output for all participants in the collaboration Creates new opportunities, starting ongoing dialogues with other customers and companies However there are consequences for large scale collaboration Companies will begin to shrink Coase’s Inverse Law- “Any organization will shrink as long as the cost to do something inside the company is higher than the cost of doing something on the open market.”
Technology There has been five major tech waves 1 st : 1815 early innovation in textiles and paved roads 2 nd : 1845-1875 innovations in railroads, gas, and telegraph 3 rd : 1890-1920 innovation in electronics and cars 4 th : 1944-1985 proliferation in lasting household goods 5 th : 1995-2020 innovations from different IT technologies in the internet and globalization Cloud computing and Collaboration is the next step in the ever changing world Book stores -> Amazon.com, Libraries -> Google.com, CD Stores -> iTunes, TV -> Youtube Technology has the potential to make life much easier and simpler for people
Changes in Markets and Management “ Markets are Conversations” Markets are ever changing The nature behind the consumers and companies is drastically changing Collaboration between companies is necessary Management techniques are also changing Companies need to begin focusing on individual people and their experiences no matter the customer base Companies will use multiple other companies to achieve this “the focus is on access to resources, no the ownership of those resources Value Chains are changing The inner workings of companies are evolving
New Innovations of Collaboration Ways to collaborate are also evolving, new ways to collaborate for business are opening up Companies need to be “out there” Companies have to be open to change and applying these new techniques Twitter could help find new customers and consumers for the company Facebook could help strengthen your companies internal structure between people
Providing a Structure for Collaboration Most important part for collaboration is establishing a strong foundation for collaboration Authors talk about certain things a company needs to have Create a structure that enables trust Create the environment where a social network can live, or become part of existing networks Share the vision, the goals Motivate people in the right way and give them the freedom to deliver Talk about the rules that guide collaborative behavior Although these might not make a direct effect it will definitely make co-workers trust one another
Social Computing The way management toward consumers is going to change The entire customer relationship management cycle will be transformed by the tools and techniques that are in common use in the consumer space Reaching out to consumers and informing them will become easier using different tools Wikis, blogs, online communities Using new tools will also open up how businesses can handle different sides of the company Use of videos to solve customer problems Use of online communities to help customers with problems Consumers will begin to make more of an impact on what goes on in development in products Overall, the use of new and emerging social computing and collaboration capabilities in the enterprise, enabled by a platform of on-premises software + cloud-based services, promises to have profound and far reaching effects on how organizations function, and create fundamentally new and powerful ways of innovating, marketing and selling to, and delighting customers
Better Business Network and “Collaboration in the Clouds” Although there are many different things that could slow cloud collaboration down “ It is therefore no longer possible for us to continue following the road that we first began travelling back in the seventeenth century” This is very important for Better Business Network Gives insight into how the company should be structured What different things need to be done for the company to succeed Also this book allows for BBN to be using these new ideas and concepts Most importantly it will help make BBN more adaptive and responsive to changes
