Coiling is a pottery technique where clay is rolled into thin coils and wrapped around each other to build up forms layer by layer. To make coils, a piece of clay about the size of a fist is rolled out on a flat surface until it reaches the desired length, then wrapped around the base of a sculpture to start building up the shape through successive wrapped coils.

2. How to Make Coils First, you need to grab a pile of clay. Rip off a piece, about the size of your fist.Start rolling it out on a flat surface, and it should be getting longer. Once it is the length that you need it to be, start wrapping it around the base of your sculpture.
