PREFACE
Optics and electronics have many differences as well as similarities. Both the
disciplines have a wide variety of applications. The relevance of these areas in
modern day technology is beyond any doubt. We use them everyday in almost
every realm of our life – as tools and aids for communication, entertainment,
medical diagnosis, education etc.
The interdisciplinary nature of the subjects necessitates productive cross-
interaction between the diverse branches and sub-branches, as also development
of an awareness of the trends and projections of these fascinating fields. It is
with this objective in view that the ‘International Conference on Convergence of
Optics and Electronics’ (COE), has been organized during March 26 – 27, 2011.
The Conference is aimed at providing a common forum conducive to formal and
informal scientific interaction and exchange between the optics and electrnics
communities.
Over 50 papers have been submitted using an on-line conference management
system. The 32 accepted papers are included in the proceedings. There are 7
invited papers (talks) authored by eminent academicians, which are also included
in the proceedings. Only one invited speaker (Boon S. Ooi) could not come due
to some unavoidable circumstances. The areas covered are:
– Interferometry and Holography
– Fibre Optics and Integrated Optics
– Wireless Communications
– Communication Networks
– Optical Sensors and Systems
– Biomedical Optics and Electronics
– Optical and Digital Image Processing
– Optical Design and Instrumentation
– Pattern Recognition and Machine Intelligence
– Optics in Computing
– Solar Photovoltaics and Green Energy Systems
– Nanophotonics and Nanoelectronics
– DSP and VLSI
We are indebted to the members of the international advisory committee
who took serious interest in the Conference and have contributed significantly
to this publication. We are also grateful to all the invited speakers, specially to
Prof. H. John Caulfield for agreeing to come to Kolkata, India.
We are indebted to SPIE for sponsoring the Conference. We also thank SPIE
and Optical Society of America for travel assistance to two invited speakers.
