What if interfaces to government were simple, beautiful, and easy to use? What if the brightest minds and innovators from the fields design, software- and product development worked together with government institutions to create apps, tools and services?
These are some of the questions and visions I am currently focusing on in my work at the Open Knowledge Foundation Germany. In my talk I want to share my ideas on how to bring them alive and give examples of beautiful service design in collaboration with government institutions and citizens that lend their hands, not only their voices.

2012 retrospective

2011 Code for America Annual Report

Both organisations have joined forces to assess how cities around the world are developing their capacity to innovate and to what extent such innovation improves resident outcomes. This webinar shared key findings from the forthcoming OECD/Bloomberg Enhancing Cities Innovation Capacity report based on responses to the joint Survey on Innovation Capacity to more than 80 cities from around the world.
Networked society City Index 2014
The fifth edition of the report ranks Stockholm first followed by London, Paris, Singapore and Copenhagen.
The 2014 edition of the Networked Society City Index examines and ranks 40 cities from around the world, looking at their performance, challenges and opportunities in terms of ICT, sustainability and development. The extensive research gives us a glimpse into the future of the city.
The report also continues to explore the connection between ICT maturity and triple bottom line development in cities around the world.
One of the key findings from the report is the fact that cities with a low ICT maturity tend to be improving their ICT maturity faster than high performing cities, indicating a catch-up effect. Many cities also have the opportunity to leapfrog by avoiding expensive and increasingly obsolete physical infrastructure and instead move straight ahead to advanced mobile technology.
Stockholm’s top ranking is thanks to its well-developed ICT infrastructure, extremely well-developed open data and e-services and high-quality access to both fixed and mobile broadband, thanks to extensive infrastructure rollouts.

The English-language translation of the Open Government project by XIP (Public Innovation Network) in Barcelona, Spain. The articles written by 42 experts are an important source of knowledge for the worldwide Open Government community, and are already the context for debate in administrations and governments in Spanish- and Catalan-speaking communities. Many of the experts are from Spain and remember Franco, so there is a clear anti-fascist subtext, in addition to the primary pro-democracy, pro-OpenGov message.
