LEARNING
OBJECTIVE:
Describe certain climatic phenomena that occur on global level
SPOT THE DIFFERENCE
• The Shrinkage of Arctic Ice
• This is how Arctic cap has diminished in the past twenty years. The lowest record point
was in 2012.
• Icecap melting includes not only the melting of the ice but also the melting of
permafrost which also releases gases into the atmosphere.

• If climate change is along-term change in the
average weather patterns, _____________ is
the long term heating of Earth’s surface since
pre-industrial period.
Human activities contribute to global warming
by increasing the greenhouse effect.
What are greenhouse gases?
Greenhouse gases are gases in Earth’s
atmosphere that trap heat. They let sunlight
pass through the atmosphere, but they
prevent the heat that the sunlight brings from
leaving the atmosphere.
The main greenhouse gases are:
Water vapor
Carbon dioxide
Methane
Ozone
Nitrous oxide
Chlorofluorocarbons
Water vapor is
the most
potent of the
greenhouse
gases in Earth’s
atmosphere,
and it’s sort of
a unique
player among
the
greenhouse
gases.
Of the
greenhouse
gases,
carbon
dioxide (CO2)
is the most
prominent.
When cows burp,
they release
bursts of gas that
are full of
methane, a
greenhouse gas
that traps heat
from the sun
more than 20
times as
efficiently as
carbon dioxide.
Surface O3 is a
result
of air pollution;
it must be
distinguished
from naturally
occurring
stratospheric O3,
which has a very
different role in
the planetary
radiation
balance.
Nitrous oxide
is known as
laughing
gas for the
feelings of
euphoria it
can induce,
but its effect
on the
climate is no
joke.
Chlorofluorocarbons
(CFCs) are nontoxic,
nonflammable
chemicals containing
atoms of carbon,
chlorine, and
fluorine. They are
used in the
manufacture of
aerosol sprays,
blowing agents for
foams and packing
materials, as
solvents, and as
refrigerants.

Agreement
• Aside from these impacts of the
climate change that we are
experiencing, we still have
two cyclical events that we
encounter- El Niño and La Niña.
Research five facts about these
two events and discuss it in the
class in our next meeting.
