The document provides instructions for proper disposal of bulk metal in New York City. Large metal items too big for recycling bins, like appliances or shelving, should be placed next to bins for collection. Pressurized gas tanks will not be collected due to explosion risks, but empty tanks can be recycled after removing valves. Residents are advised to exchange propane tanks through vendors rather than removing valves themselves due to safety hazards.

Cleaner Curbs: Proper disposal of bulk metal nyc
1. Proper Disposal of Bulk Metal NYC
Large metal items that are too big to fit in a rigid recycling
container or clear recycling bag, such as metal shelving,
large appliances or any other large items that are 100
percent metal or predominantly metal should be placed at
the curb next to recycling containers or bags for recycling
collection
-DSNY Rules and Regulations
2. Fact About Bulk Metal
• The DSNY will not collect residential/non-commercial metal tanks
(propane and other pressurized gas cylinder tanks) because they
are pressurized and may explode when condensed in a collection
truck. For information on disposal of house fire extinguishers or
disposable helium balloon tanks go to the wasteless website at:
www.nyc.gov/html/nycwasteless or, call the New York City
Customer Service Center at 311. You may dispose of them as
recyclables if the tanks are empty and the valve assemblies have
been removed from the tanks.
3. Geo Friend-Lee's Tip
• The DSNY does not encourage residents to remove the valve
assemblies themselves as it can be hazardous. You may exchange
the tanks at the point of purchase or dispose of them at a private
propane vendor for reuse or disposal. To find a propane vendor,
look for “Gas Propane” in the yellow pages. Metal recyclables may
be placed out for recycling collection
