The Spanish Civil War lasted from 1936 to 1939 and resulted in the victory of nationalist forces led by General Francisco Franco. It began after an attempted coup against the Republican government and divided Spain between those loyal to the government and those supporting the nationalist rebels. The war had widespread international participation and consequences and marked the beginning of Franco's long dictatorship over Spain.
